pennant frequency?
« on: May 06, 2008, 09:29:13 pm »

More info required please :o :D.
Just as I thought I had learnt enough, something else has cropped up.

If I have to sail my boat at a busy lake, I apparently need a pennant on the ariel showing what frequency I'm using.

How is this info displayed?  is it colours? like wiring. Or just the number of the crystal? or what else?

Thanks for any info.

Bob :)

27mhz, each frequency in the waveband is allocated a color

40mhz - a green pennant with the last 3 didgits on, (40.865 would display 865)

oh no, dont go an confuse me again. :(

That chart lists brown as covering about 6 channels.
remembering I am a rank beginner at this lark, and I dont want to annoy other boaters on the day, whats the etiquette if i turn up and someone else is already using a brown flag?
Do i wait till he's finished? or ask which particular brown flag channel he's on?

Blimey, and I just got the hang of which knife to use at a dinner party :embarrassed: :'(

Hi sunnybob,

Brown is all you are required to show.
If another boater is using a brown pennant, then you must not switch on you transmitter. (or your receiver)
If this is a public pond then it is best to let him know you are on the same frequency, so you can arrange to sail at separate times.

If sailing at a club site, then they will usually have a peg and board system so every one knows what is going on.

ok,thanks for that, I think I'm getting there now. :D
One last question, is there a particular shape for this pennant? are they sold at shops? or does any scrap of coloured materiel do the job?

You could do the simple thing of painting a clothes peg brown that would do

Im with Stavros on this one best thing is a wooden peg just dont forget to use a pingpong ball or similar for the tip of your ariel.

Not sure about anyone else but its probably the first thing people look for when checking peoples Frequency channels unless you have a peg board set up at the lakeside.

You keep going Sunnybob, I have been a straight running boater for more years than I can remember, so thought I would have a go at this "radio lark" Last years springer at Wicksteed was ok, so built new "battle Springer" (see springer section).
Beale park this weekend saw me loose my brown flag, break the peg from the peg board, bend my Ariel, shipmate60 jamming the rudder (my fault, put servo in wrong place) and finally dropping the bl***y boat while the memsab was trying to take a picture (just hold it there dear-------no its slipping------just a sec-------so its really slipping------click-------drop !!!)
Oh I just love radio, still all fixed for wicksteed (L plates fitted)

Hi guys ....i always carry coloured pegs with me for the a.m channel ...you can get plastic pegs in a rainbow of colours.......just add some appropriately coloured paint to half of peg for the splits

also practice golf balls for the top of the airial are good they are light and have loads of holes in them just cut between two holes and it slips onto the airial a treat !

           regards......bob.

Robbo , dont be giving away the secret of letting the radio waves out through the practice-ball gaps to improve performance and range ::) >>:-(  There are of course de-lux anti-eye-pokers...this is mine ! Ther are also some soft sponge golf-ball size ones in rainbow stripes to confuse the opposition..."guess what frequency I`m on ?????" Wonder how many will feel compelled to add a skull and crossbones to the black 2.4ghz t/x. pennants, Not required of course but I feel they should be adopted as a courtesy ( black pennants not the pirate bit ).

If it's of interest and you twist my arm.

I use pennants made from paper and printed on the computer (40Mhz: a green rectangle with white numbers using a bold blocky font, I used one called swiss. The numbers are printed twice so that the pennant can be made by folding the rectangle back on itself to give a double sided pennant.)

I first tried covering the pennant with sellotape. This worked well for about a season but the tape starts to shrink after that time, fluttering at the end of the aerial causes damage and it's not waterproof.

Now, I use the same method to make the pennant but laminate the end product (using an el cheapo laminator from a well known store where every little makes them slightly richer). I punch a hole in the edge of the laminate thread with thin nylon string and tie to my aerial guard.  My current pennants have been in use for over two years.

HTH

Doug

PS I use an old 35mm film canister for an aerial guard
