Just saying hello..
« on: May 15, 2008, 11:34:43 pm »

I've just joined the forum and thought I best say hello..

I'm Richard, I live in Eastbourne and I've been building model boats for more years than I care to remember. I have had a break for the last three or four years though, but now I'm single again [ :o ] it seemed as good a time as any to start again.

I'm about to buy myself another submarine kit, having build nowt but subs really apart from an aborted 14' Titanic and a steam launch. I'm an ex-secretary of The Association of Model Submariners, and used to own the infamous ex Bernie Woods USSBN Patrick Henry.

That's me in a nutshell....

Cheers,

Rich

Hi Rich

Welcome to Mayhem.
I am amazed that Das Boot is still available as a name.

If you are doing a build we would welcome you do start a build thread. We don't see too many submarine builds. I am sure that many would be interested in seeing a build in this specialist area.

Regards

Well, thank you gentlemen, for the warm welcome... don't know why I chose 'das boot' as a sign on name, guess it seemed a good idea at the time!

If you'd like an 'as it happens' build report, I'll certainly do my best for you....WHEN I can make my mind up what to build!  :-\

Cheers,

Rich

Das Boot, what a great film / mini series / TV series.

.... a 14 foot Titanic.... aborted??? What didn't the lookout see coming?   ;D

Just joking, welcome to the Mayhem Rich!

I can remember driving into the park in Derby for an AMS convention in my old Nissan Estate, sun roof open and Bernie standing with his head poking through the roof, cap on backwards, binoculars to his eyes, and the theme tune from Das Boot blasting out on the car stereo. Lord knows what Derby thought of us two common Southerners....

The 14' Titanic was started originally a show model, to be able to strike a radio controlled iceberg, sink and then be raised afterwards. Due to technical problems I joined the AMS to learn how to make model boats sink and come up again....ten years later I was still building submarines, never did finish Titanic. The iceberg was finished and is still in the attic at the old family home...that was as big as a dining table!

I'm in no real rush Gary, once I've moved and settled myself in the new place, then I can really start looking around. As much as I'd like another big boat, a recent severe heart attack and a smaller flat mean nothing too big, preferably ABS or a converted plastic kit [no room for a work station and everything must be tidied away as and when I finish for the evening]so wood or fibreglass is out of the equation straight away.
But, there's plenty out there to choose from...

Cheers,

Rich
