warship kits
« on: May 17, 2008, 04:05:49 pm »

I've been having a sniff round the web at some of these large plastic warship kits, some of them look very suitable for r/c conversions.

Can any of you guys tell me of a largish plastic kit of a warship that's suitable to convert to r/c use? I've looked a several but they all seem a bit on the small side to me, it's bad enough trying to cram everything needed into a five foot submarine, let alone a two foot warship. I seem to remember seeing a few at the shows I used to visit...Tamiya perhaps? Or were they Revell? Airfix even?

Your assistance gentlemen please...

Oh...no Airfix Corvettes. Been there, done that [two of them]

Two words: Nichimo Yamato.

A few more, the Nichimo Yamato in 1:200 scale - motorised as standard (after a fashion)

a link: http://www.steelnavy.com/Yamat200.htm

I'm VERY slowly putting one together at the moment.

Some advice, the moulding you may get may well be new.... The moulds it was taken from, less so.

Ye Gods...that is some plastic kit. The price is a tad on the frightening side though...I'm only a poor old council worker. But what a kit it is..I'd love to see some pics of how you are getting on with yours Robert.

Thanks for the information, I appreciate that.

the more affordable options would be the Tamiya 1/350 series battlships or Aircraft carrier.
I have seen several done up quite well.

hi there you find most plastic kits can be converted with in reason. The small they are the harder it is. As for war ships With out a major challenge i would stick with 1:350 scale. all tamiya/revell /airfix are pretty straight forward. In these boats theres a fair bit of room and they can take a fair bit of weight. Tamiya kit have come down in price but you can get airfix and revell for not much. One place that is worth looking at is pocket bond , they import a lot of special kits. I got SS France and the Russian ice breaker arktika    for them via my local model shop. I have converted both of these. In Howe's of oxford they do these read to run boat for round the £30 mark they are 1:350 and they do a bismark and 2 Russian aircraft carriers. Also These kit are available from trumpeter via pocket bond.  If there a certain navy or time scale you like let us know and i sure some here will tell you what kits are available,
