Wire for handrails- what gauge ?
« on: May 21, 2008, 08:21:14 am »

I have some 1:72 scale stanchions to fix. Can someone tell me how I work out what gauge wire I need for the handrail and centre rail.

If I know which size brass wire (in thous) can I convert this some way to give me the gauge of copper wire I will need ?

Thanks. O0

Try this!

The first column is the gauge. Second column is the diameter in mm for that gauge in SWG. Third column is diameter in inches. And finally (because I'm using it myself!) the last column is a diameter in inches which at 1/72nd scale equates to a particular gauge. (So a one-inch diameter in real life is near enough 28-gauge.)

24 gauge will slip easily through my etch 1/72 stanchions . If you pull - draw soft wire to get semi-hard you, can use a slightly heavier gauge. www.johnrhaynes.com
