T L A's !
« on: May 21, 2008, 08:01:13 pm »

What's your favourite Acronyms and TLA's?
Everyone knowns some.
I know they are very elitist but they can be fun....

To get the ball rolling, here a few I use nearly every day.

RTFM = Read the Flipping Manual.
DOA  = Dead on Arrival
RTM  = Return to Manufacture
BSoD = Blue screen of Death
MIP   = Manual Intervention Process ( User's an idiot but we can't say that! )

And my favourites:

IGFAF = I'm Going Outside For A Fag

OSLIP = OH SHooT! Lets Panic! ( No plan in place for this emergency! ) >>:-(

… and in case you were wondering, TLA = Three Letter Acronyms!    {-)

Of course, strictly speaking, an acronym is a word formed from initial letters and spoken as a word.

TLA is therefore not an acronym at all. It's a three letter abbreviation.

Example: BBC - spoken as B,B C is an abbreviation. NASA, spoken as Nahsa, is an acronym.

Andy - in pedantic mood! {-)

Not "TLA's", but in our house we use:

    WALK and DINNER so the dog does not understand what we are saying. Trouble is she understands both French and English!

  TTFN....

My cat's bilingual as well. She understands both cat and dog. If I say either "Woof!" or "Miaow!" to her, she thinks it means "Food!". (Mind you, she thinks anything you say to her means food.)

Martin,

As an IT bod you would come across

GOK - God Only Knows
BRS mode -  Big Red Switch mode
FLK - Funny Looking Kid

and as a virgin Footy racer I come across
NSL - Numpty Sea Lawyers  (always very plural)

My dad was in the reme during the war , and every vehicle he had , had KYTHO painted on them ....translation.........keep your thieving hands off  O0

          cleaner version of the above , which probably has enabled everyone to work it out.........like the modern version though.

BRS mode -  Big Red Switch mode

2 call computer resolutions comments come to mind:

Fault: Flash! Bang! Dead..... Smoke!

Another call's fix was: I reduced the input alternating potential below the lowest quiescent value, allowed a full discharge of the chopper and rectifier circuits and reinitiated the start cycle. ( What I did do? )

OK folk....last two posts deleted as they became far to explicit for this site where youngsters are free to roam.

I have sent a PM to both contributors.

Please keep future contributions appropriate to all site users/Members.

Thanks.
