SPEEDING TICKET
« on: May 27, 2008, 05:35:21 pm »

I have been a naughty boy! Had a speeding ticket in the post today from the Gendarmarie. 73 kmh in a 50 kmh area. Must have been a mobile camera/gun I did not see.

The interesting thing about the ticket was that it was for 90€ if paid with 15 days; 130€ if within 45 days and 350€ thereafter!

Also, I was offered several ways to pay: by telephone, by Internet, by cheque, by cash. A form was included in case I wanted to contest the "infraction", if so I had to send 130€ with it. I am sure they were not prejudging my contesting it!!!!!

In France you do not get points taken from your licence, you have them added, up to 12 then it's fini!

It's probably just as well that you didn't get caught in the French harbour blockade.  The Gendarmerie might have taken a greater dislike to you.................Fancy being slapped with a wet salmon...... {-) {-)

You get points added to your licence in the UK (unless you can make the judge cry with a good sob story or get a good lawyer) but  they only last for 3 years. Mine went last year  :)

Dougal 99:

Thanks for noting my deliberate mistake!!!!

I should have said that in France everyone starts with 12 points and have some deleted for each offence. No points, no drive!

Roger,

I got zapped by one of those mobile radar cameras in France last October whilst holidaying up there......Mind you, having a Spanish registered car saved the day......I don't think they even tried to track me down.....

Two words: North Wales.

I went there last year, saw eighteen million speed camera signs. Didn't see any cameras. Then I got (unknowingly) radar'd as I left a village, doing what you do: accelerating (in bright weather, on a clea, straightr road, with no other traffic, pedestrians or sheep in a mile) to the national limit.

"38mph".

Don't start me!  >>:-(

I can beat that..whilst sweeping along the A22 I went through a speed camera zone and received 13[yes, thirteen]speeding tickets...for doing 4mph! Apparently the digital front/rear warning beacons on the sweeper triggered the camera...oops!

Hey Rich, does that mean you've got 39 points on your licence, and will have to re-sit it three times?

Caught speeding 13 times in one day. You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself and banned from the road forever.
It was a good job you werent doing 5 mph!!!

Are they still leagal in GB? Do they work?

Has anyone ever successfully argued their way out of a speeding ticket?

He can, Good old Mr Freeman ....and the devices used to spot radar are not very good these days as when the radar fires you are booked, in the past it was omitting a signal so you could spot it,, but they would pick up the device on top of crossings to spot pedestrians so would be beeping all the time so you stooped listening, there are Jamar's that fit in your grill but the police can do you for them as they transmit.

Dear Martin,

Yes they are leagal(!), but they must be yellow and you must have good and proper cause to be using them (viz., roadsweeping, transporting abnormal loads etc. - large model boats do not fit into this category unfortunately!). However, going around all the time with a working full spread of high intensity yellows strapped across the top of your car would tend to attract adverse attention!!! :police: {-)

Hi viz warning beacons are legal, and in fact are a legal requirement for slow moving vehicles and their escorts[if used] They must be amber/orange in colour, and only used when the vehicle is actually working, not just driving around posing with rows of amber lights flashing away! This covers refuse collection vehicles, road sweepering and road maintainence vehicles, heavy haulage and wide/abnormal loads and also covers any escort vehicles.

The ones on my new sweeper are a digital zeon beacon fitted with high intensity bulbs..you can see the things a mile off. The old style rotating beacons were deemed as dangerous to people who suffer from epilepsy, so all new vehicles are now fitted with the digital style ones.

Cheers,

Rich

.....and tractors. I find the latter one of the most dangerous things on the road because of their lack of speed, bulk, ability to spread muck from those huge tyres and the fact that the agricultural industry seems to think it has some right to do as it likes.

When I first bought my house here in France with a very large garden I bought a used 24hp mower, it came with a yellow, flashing beacon which did not work!

My boss has developed a knack for getting off speeding tickets
1) When the first ticket/ letter comes in he sends it back requesting a copy of the calibration certificate of the detector
2) If the certificate if sent (only happened once) request a copy of the operators certificate of training (only a few forces have them)

Normally by the time they get all this info they have got fed up and moved on to some other poor guy
if not then you have to pay up >>:-(

It's official, today a cop pn the Jeremy Vine show admitted they will nick anyone for the most trivial of offences as they have got a quota to keep up. They are very unhappy with the situation as it is forced upon them and they are just being turned into revenue collectors!
However, my brother, whilst riding his motorcycle, just got fitted up by two of them as they couldn't catch the true offender so pulled him out of the traffic line instead, maintaining he had overtaken vehicles and strayed over the double white lines... he was innocent of the offence and totally gutted but still had to cough up the fine or risk going to court and paying a darned sight more and losing time off work. It's a form of blackmail really , it was his word against two police officers so he couldn't even protest his innocence as he would have lost even more than the standard fine.
It's this kind of thing which is losing our faith in the justice system and police force and thats a great shame as there are a lot of decent blokes out there in the force  and they are being tarred with the same brush.

When I was caught speeding I was offered a speed awareness course for £80 instead of the £60 fine, but no points or record.

Well worth the money, it's made me a better driver.

Going back to the French system, it is a lot different than the UK.

Firstly they do have cameras, and you get the penalty in the post if your over the limit. But no points on your leicence.

If your stopped in France they simply apply a calcualtion to the speed your caught doing, so the further over the limit the more you going to pay. So if your 100ks over the limit its 1000Euro to clear your name.

If you cannot pay your car is taken as payment!

They have a great way of stopping you to, on motorways they setup super stealthy traps, record your speed, they then pull you at the next toll booth. Thing is they are so polite and respectful, they dont see you as someone breaking the law, just someone paying the penalty for the speed you were doing. Go a coffee from them when I was cought {-)

ah boys  we got new toys on our cop car now >>:-( 2 high speed cameras mounted on
the roof of the car. as you drive towards or away from the car the cam snaps your plate
and runs it in the laptop  telling the cop everything about you and your car >>:-(
they got me for a uninspected car $150.00...

and in new york this works sometimes :embarrassed:

1) When the first ticket/ letter comes in he sends it back requesting a copy of the calibration certificate of the detector
2) If the certificate if sent (only happened once) request a copy of the operators certificate of training (only a few forces have them)

in France i was told that on the pay motorways that when you go through a toll booth they rec the time and if you get to the next toll booth to soon you have been speeding as it time over distance. That explanes why you all ways see bike on the hard shoulder about .5 km from the toll booth there just waiting for the correct time to go thought the toll booth.

I'm told the French do that on canals if you are too quick between locks, although I think they just make you wait....

Yes, the time from entering and exiting the AutoRoute can be used to detect speeding but it is not done for every transit. I assume the gendarmerie take a sample when it occurrrs to them to do so.

I have a "LiberT" pass which allows me to enter and exit without taking a ticket. every two months i get a bill for my use of the AutoRoute which gives the journey made, the date and time of start and end but i have not had a speeding penalty (even though some of my journey times are rather fast!).
