oops GF.v.pollystyreen help
« on: May 28, 2008, 10:44:41 pm »

Building a barge  today and thought i would use pollystyreen for the bow and stern sections ,cut and sanded them all to shape and then started to cover the hull with tissue and resin .Why did i not ask whether there would be a reaction  :o . i covered the  center section ply first and then the stern ,and onto the bow ,looking up to see the stern sinking  :embarrassed: as the resin eats the styreen away .
So tomorow its cut away the mess and make new styreen sections, so what should i cover the styreen with prior to GF ,i thought of paint or maybe pva and paper tissue ??.

If you use an epoxy coating resin such as West System there would be no problem.

Portside ll

To help us all it might be worth a little clarification - the polystyrene that you used must have been foam - not  solid polystyrene sheet as used for vacforming and Airfix kits (also known as HIP or HIPS).

Similarly the resin must have been polyester - the car repair smelly one!  As you have discovered it eats foam PS  - all types

Ow Abreast speaks of High density foam from B&Q - if that is Ps it will vanish likewise (Jablite is a brand of expanded polystyrene foam)
if it is polyurethane (PU) material it will be fine, as will several others.
However DON'T even think about cutting PU with hot wire - it dissociates to gases including cyanides!

<<So tomorow its cut away the mess and make new styreen sections, so what should i cover the styreen with prior to GF ,i thought of paint or maybe pva and paper tissue >>

All of these are good - but if you have to GF it use epoxy resin as ukengineman says, or just paste on lots of newspaper with PVA or better still emulsion paint.

please keep us posted with chapter 2 ;D

Yes i do need help ,thats what the wife says but thats a different story.
the styreen was cut from a block and shaped to fit ,a wire brush makes easy work of that (top tip)

BEFORE

AFTER
New foam now cut and shaped and covered with paper tissue and PVA in the shed drying .
more to follow

remade the sections in foam and covered them with PVA ready for GF.

once done the barge was given a coat of black paint all over

and a bow piece made from card and with two brass eyelets fitted it looks the part

the inside was lined with lead for ballast (not nearly enough) and an electric window motor for the drive
a wheel house ,rail and hatch cover was made from ply

and a forward mast fitted along with a couple of mooring posts
