TID 164
« on: June 05, 2008, 09:44:30 am »

I saw a nice model of TID 164 on display and reading through one of my books the other day found a nice photo of her at work. Apparently she spent most of her life at Rosyth attached to HMS Lochinvar at Port Edgar.

Stavros,
Before the RMAS was formed in 1976 all auxiliary vessels were appointed to a port and within that port a department.
IE Portsmouth Armaments.
The band on the hull denoted the port, the band on the funnel which department within that port.
So pre 1976 all auxiliary vessels had them.
After 1976 the RMAS Buff and Black livery took over, but by then no TID's left in operational service.

Bob

PS rmasmaster does have some idea what he is talking about as he was my old skipper on Naval Armament Vessels and a few more and is a recently retired RMAS Master!!

Sorry Stavros, I got confused with the numbers Chatham had one or two which were 16+, I think 167 could be one. But it looks as though yours was a RNAD tug all its life. Though I was right she did carry a funnel band and a bulwark colour, but it does not subtract from the fact yours is a nice model, wish I could build to that standard. I would say that those fed up with Admiralty colours but want a TID other outfits had and used them, PLA had about 5 of them and all well maintained.

I have chatted to some of my old colleagues who have retired and the bulwark colour for the Clyde and Rosyth for  PAS was probaly yellow with a blue band for all tugs. Although the the photo appears to show this TID with RNAD funnel bands but as to her bulwark colours am not sure in this pic but prior to PAS in 1965, RNAD had thier own colour of red, 3" for harbour tugs and 6" for seagoer's. In PAS Pompey bulwarks were red and Plymouth and Portland was wight but all funnel bands were azure blue.

Hi Stavros and happy New Year,
Reference your comment to me that 164 did not have a blue funnel band, I came across this colour photo of her working on the river Forth.

Hi Kemo,
Yeah you are probaly correct as she was a RNAD tug most of her life. Just when I first looked at the photo I could not make my mind up, in fact it threw me as to what colour, but looking again it probaly is red in the shade. All the same thanks for putting me right.
