Very wacky yacht design by Phillipe Starck
« on: June 06, 2008, 02:46:31 pm »

Spotted on Yacht Spotter,  a very spectacular (think James Bond villain's) Phillpe Starck designed super yacht from Blohm & Voss.

You'll have to scroll down but when you see it you'll know what I mean !!!

In December 2004 Blohm & Voss announced the contract for a 118-meter motor yacht, project name Sigma (hull number 970). The yacht is designed by renowned French designer Philippe Starck, but no more details were revealed. The drawing, that was released together with the statement, however said more than 1.000 words. It showed a futuristic looking yacht with an axe bow and a small, tall superstructure at the aft end of the yacht.

The Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg was too busy with other projects so it was decided to build Sigma at the HDW shipyard in Kiel, which is also part of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

Since the statement in December 2004 the project name of the yacht seems to have changed to SF99 and there are rumors that her length increased to 130-meter although this has not been confirmed. After almost three years of silence Sigma was launched today! The following photos were made by Carl Groll.

with that shape of bow and style of superstructure it actually looks like an extremely eccentric submarine.

I dont think its "ugly" but its dam differnt.  I dont think theres anything wrong with trying new designs ::)

Depends who is paying for it. Having lots of dosh doesn't give you a monopoly on taste or design.

cant say it will ever be a design classic, it sure as hell is ugly in my opinion from the stern view especially...

but i suppose if you have the sort of money that buys you a yacht like that then you also fill it full of techo gadgets, so i guess the view inside may be quite spectacular..... and when your in it you aint looking at it !

eachto their own..... i dont like it !!!

It has a retro look to me, a similarity to the early Victorian torpedo boats/ turbina. A curious attraction because it is so different, yes I would buy one if I won heavy on the Euro lottery.

Looks like the designer was inspired by the USN's prototype DD-X "stealth" destroyer! (link); unless the yacht is built out of solid platinum, I doubt it cost quite as much to build, though.

I can't say I like the design - looks to me like a sawn-off nuclear submarine with a white paint job - but whatever else you say about it, it's certainly original and striking, unlike the average "oversize cabin cruiser" luxury motor yacht.

Why would you want two unless you are one of those poshies with hot & cold water.  O0

Of course, Naval Architects (and I'm not sure this guy is one) never have to go to sea in their designs. It's left to the Engineers to get it to work.

Did anyone notice that the London 'wobbly bridge' was hailed as a great bit of work by the Architects until it started to bounce up and down. Then the Civil Engineers suddenly got the blame and had to fix it. Same principle applies to ships.

Has the designer been watching Thunderbirds or Captain Scarlet or something? I'm sure this is what Gerry Anderson & co thought we'd be sailing around in by now.

Mr. Starke is not a naval architect but "just" a general designer. Has done every thing from cups to crappers. Some are good some are hideous.
Now he has done this art deco yacht!  :-\

Definatley agree about the bike.

Stark is better known as an award winning designer of kitchen and household appliances. ::)

Hence the Moulinex yacht I presume  ;)
