TID SKEG
« on: June 16, 2008, 08:35:43 am »

I hope I have posted this in the right place.

I am planning to scratch build a TID tug.

I think I have got my head around building the chine hull but I am having trouble deciding on how to approach the skeg.

All GRP hull mouldings seem to have this as part of the moulding.

Has anyone scratch builty a TID who can give some help with building the skeg please?

Thanks all

Billy

Hi there Wor Billy

I have just been scanning the forum because I know there are topics on the TID tugs  O0 but, I cannot find them.   So I wonder if someone can point in the right direction.   What I am looking for is a good sideview photograph of the SKEG and prop shaft.    I have a sketch from the Plans magazine and going from the sketch, the SKEG on the back of the tug seems to be made from a very narrow plate section - where the prop shaft is visible through the SKEG.   If this is the case, you could add this SKEG after you have planked or covered the hull in your preferred choice of materials and then adding the SKEG out of thin ply or Plasticard, glued in place when the hull is near enough complete.

Before I could give a 100% answer of the way I would do this; I would have to see a good picture first or a good drawing.

Try thi;
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php#24

The pic of TID 172 may give the wrong impression. It shows the forward "triangle" below the prop shaft to be fully plated whilst early drawings show what looks like a brace (flat bar) running from the leading edge of the bottom of the skeg to the underside of the prop tube.
But as Martin would say, "What do I know?"

Sorry,
Link is wrong.
I posted some info on skegs c. 17/23 Oct 07.
I will try to post links but duty calls at the moment so I'm short of time.

hi wor Billy

Included a 'scribble' to try and explain - looking at Dicky's picture, which is the clearest of the two - we can make out a rudder support strip which is fastened to the lowermost SKEG.   Whether this rudder support strip runs further forward and is welded to the main hull, I am unsure.   However, if it was me building this - I would make a collar/tube which fits outside of the propeller shaft and to this collar - I would solder two vertical brass strip supports.   One of these supports which is marked number 1, would go through the main hull and it would be bonded to the Keel.   The other support which is numbered, 2, would go to the outermost of the SKEG and be soldered to the brass rudder support strip.  This whole assembly would then be clad in either balsa wood or plywood or come to that it could even be clad in plastic and shaped to an aerofoil shape.

I hope the scribble is of some help.

Thanks all - what a great forum this is.

I am taking parts from all suggestions which is what I think Bluebirds sketches represent and run with it.

Thanks again for your invaluable help.

I have to say that building great sounding guitars is a stroll in the park compared to building model boats  ;)
