Paint Colour for Trent Lifeboat
« on: August 04, 2006, 12:12:02 pm »

I painted my last Model Slipway Trent lifeboat by hand and yes I made a complete AR*SE of it.

So I have decided to build another Trent and I will be spraying it this time.

Can anyone recommend the colours needed for the hull and superstructure

I will be purchasing the paints at Halfords

Thanks

AlanB

If you can get the colour specification from RNLI you can go to a paint specialist who will mix it and fill an aerosol for you.  I have seen this advertised some time ago but not used it myself.  Hope it is still available.

Best wishes

Hi AlanB..

If you wish to be authentic and can get the colours mixed at your local paintshop, then these are what you are looking for. I got the code direct from The Engineering section of the RNLI

Lifeboats Blue (BS381c) Oxford Blue 105
Lifeboats Yellow (BS381c) Bold Yellow 363
Lifeboats Red (BS381c) Rail Red 539
Lifeboats Orange (BS381c) Orange 557

I got the Blue and Orange mixed in a Rattle Can at my local MotorFactors who supply and mix paints.

Declan,

Can you check your code numbers please as the chart I have shows Rail Red as 593 and not 539

But, 539 is currant red which is slightly darker.

Which is correct ? Is it Rail Red - 593 or Currant red - 539 ?

Anybody else out there in Mayhem land know ?

Terry.

Declan,

Sorry guys but if you use any of the halfords car colours manly the orange it is wrong (in my book anyway)when I worked for addlestone models and i was building my first lifeboat which was a Arun, I asked Fred the owner of the shop what was the best paint to use for colour he told me it was humbro they made the paint as close to the real thing as they could, so I used orange 18 and for the hull midnight Blue 15, and it was all air brushed on if you want to have a look go to my web site www.philsrcmodels.co.uk
For the deck I mixed up a light grey with micro sand in it to get the deck finish, having spent hours on the Newhaven lifeboat getting detail and so on.

And now I'm going to confuse the issue even more, RNLI boats exist in many different shades of blue and orange. They may all arrive from the builders painted the same colours, but they don't stay that way for very long. As anyone involved in the paint or plastics industry will know, different colours all have different degrees of light fastness, that is some will fade in sunlight much more than others. Dark blue is good, but reds, yellows and orange are about the worst, and EEC legislation on additives like cadmium haven't helped at all. I live in Poole the home of the RNLI, so I see an awful lot of lifeboats, and believe me, they are all slightly different colours, depending on how old the paint is and whether they are moored afloat. So if you want your model to represent a 'just delivered' appearance, Phil's advice may be true, but not for a boat that is even a few weeks old.
