Razer Saws
« on: June 20, 2008, 10:42:08 pm »

I have been looking at purchasing a Razer Saw but then noted that their are Ultra Thin and Flush cuttings Saws with TPI ranging from 32 to 52.

Are these saws suitable for cutting Plasticard Strip or say 1mm to 2mm Plywood? Are they of any use on thin balsa sheet to achieve a clean cut on end grain.

Can I please have your opinion on the saw that you have used and for what purpose.

All advice and opinions greatfully appreciated O0

Yes, use them all the time. Handy tools. Some have a deep blade than others and with the strong back limits the depth of cut. Go slower on styrene than wood. Buy one and try it first. Med to fine rather than coarse toothed.

But be aware that a lot of these razor saws cut on the push stroke, not the pull.

try it on a little bit of scrap, just use the forward stroke, then again just using the backwards stroke.
Or closely look at the teeth, the triangulsr teeth cut on the angle nearest the vertical.
Both sets that I have, which came with a small mitre block cut this way.

I have used one for years, great little things.

Another way to determine which way they cut on, starting at the handle rub a finger gently (or else lose a finger) along the teeth, if its sharp it cuts on the pull stroke, if not, it cuts on the push stroke.

Does it make any difference to the finished cut being on the push or pull stroke :embarrassed:

My eye sight ain't what it use to be - on the 52 TPI saw, I couldn't even see the teeth >>:-(

Martin, I have used a razor saw for more years than I can remember (although with my failing memory, that may not be all that long  :o) and find it invaluable. I have a selection of blades with different TPIs, and use them for cutting wood, including balsa, plastic, brass and aluminium. A small mitre box is also very useful, and I normally use mine when cutting with the razor saw.

Here is a pic af a Zona sabre saw set I got today from Chronos.

The top and middle blades cut on the push stroke, the bottom on the pull stroke, I hope the pic is clear enough for all to see.

Razor saws are wonderful things for use in converting plastic kits to rc. Choose a nice fine blade (high tpi?) to cut through a decking piece and firstly it's through quickly, and secondly the edge of cut is beautifully finished, needing almost no further prep, thirdly, razor saws remove very little material during the cutting, so in the example of the decking piece above, the pieces either side of the cut can often be used as a near invisible butt joint.

The limitation of razor saws is the depth of the blade below the top edge brace - that's the maximum depth of your cut, but with alittle lateral thinking that can often be overcome :)

Hi guys.....an alternative to razor saws that i have found is a small dovetail saw version of a japanese pull saw..It has a very fine blade but is quite broad so you get a good depth of cut....also being a pull saw the blade is always under tension when cutting and not under compression as when pushing so less chance of skip or wander
as they say ...it works for me !

                regards..bob.

Thanks for that bit of info - now it makes sense why its a pull saw.

Thankyou to the forum -  I will take your advice and purchase a few saws as they are not expensive and give a fine finish - well done lads

I also use a fine Dovetail Saw. It has a brass back and a deep blade (about 80mm x 200mm). a wodden, straight handle (a little like a needle file handle). There is not much set to the teeth which are very numerous and fine.
