2008 Round Britain Offshore Powerboat Race
« on: June 21, 2008, 12:41:34 pm »

Well this event starts today, I hope we get some coverage here in Sweden.

Follow it here http://www.roundbritain.info/

A little video to get us in the moodhttp://www.worldofpowerboats.com/video/videos/00003.php

A little trivia from the past: in 1984 I was in charge of Fast Boat training for the Royal Marines based in Poole. We were asked to and provided marshalling for the start of the 1984 race.
If you check this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjF14pZi-gU at 4.56 you can see the sterns of the rigid raiding craft we used, a few seconds later a couple of my guys (and maybe even me) are visible on the dock.

I envy all of you on the route and hope some of you can take and show pics of the race as it progresses.

That little lot is going to be screaming up Loch Ness at full chat on Wed. 25th on the leg from Oban to Inverness with a stop off at Inverness on the 26th and then out into the Moray firth and on to Edinburgh on Friday 27th.   Lots of good locations for photos so I better get my camera out.

Also seen here on the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7464898.stm

I see with great interest that Fabio Buzzi is entering again this year!
http://bymnews.com/news/newsDetails.php?id=27556

Fabio is my favorite boat designer of all time and Cesa 1882 with it's race tunes diesel engines was a revelation.
The BBC doesn't understand was off shore racing is but there was a short clip of Cesa 1882 on Grandstand
( yes, that long ago!) and it just flew past everything else, it even caught the camera man out as it just seem to come
out from nowhere! It was a truly radical design and concept and instantly became to boat to catch muchless beat.
That boat and it really got me into offshore boats and finally after 18 boats, I nearly got them out of my system....
Some of my boats: http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/My_models/0index.htm

I know ABC made a couple of terrible versions of Cesa 1882 but did anybody else manufacture a hull?

Bad luck so far for the Fariey boats so far.

Blue Marlin #99 sunk in Lyme Bay, crew picked up by fellow competitor, broken rib on 747 put into Weymouth and quite a few others in trouble today including Fabio Buzzi.

With the bad weather further up the coast this looks like being a race to survive let alone win  :( :( :(

PiP have two on their website, a little larger than most of your others Martin. Some good video here

From yesterdays pics the black RIB nr 9 is Swedish and has one of Sweden's better known radio presenters on board, Titti Schultz (see if that gets hit by the filter.....).

Yes Taxi, including photos on that site from today. I think it's a Fairey where the crew are waving to the photogapher in the helicopter.
It's the only competing boat with curtains I think.

Wouldnt fancy going below to put the kettle on at full chat would you?

A bit gutted I didnt know about it sooner as I would of made the trip down to Milford Haven for a looksie.

Heres a few more taken @ Inverness  when some had essential maintenance carried out      The larger boats were transported  by road from Oban ,  about 100 miles or so,   possibly something to do with engines at low rpm and overheating when negotiating lock gates.
