What do you chaps solder your railings with?
« on: June 24, 2008, 06:29:41 pm »

Hello all.

At some point soon I'll need to start soldering brass wire into stanchion thingy-majigs in order to make hand rails.

On doing a test run, I find that the white metal from my kit melts before solder I'm using.

I have been to the local iron mongers in town and they no longer can sell 70 centigrade solder ( as my kit recommends ) or even 100 degree c. Lowest they have is 130 c which is too hot for me.

I have a load of old 100% lead strip in the garage - do you think it is worth me cutting thin strips out and using that? Otherwise, does anyone have a cunning plan on what to do?

If you are sticking with the kit stanchions it's probably best to glue the wire in, superglue is probably best. However white metal stanchions are not very strong so you might be better off investing in brass ones which will make a neater job and be a lot stronger. With all brass you can either solder or glue as you prefer.

Change over to brass stanchions Steve, you'll probably end up changing them in the end anyway and its easier now.

A brief chat with a man who knows about such things suggests that machining then out will be a pain in the backside - apprently it's the round ball bit on the top that the top wire goes through that is the annoyance.

Does anyone sell such items AND hold them in stock? I've been running around for stantcions etc for Martin13, and to be honest I'll  be quicker for me to mould them out of epoxy putty rather than wait for someone like James Lane to deliver.

Scale is ( i think ) 1:15.7 (a very obvious scale :( )

How much do you think a little light engineering company would charge me?

Big_bri.

Quite possibly you are the meanest man I have ever encountered.

Is it, I ask, fair to send me to a site full of interesting and lovely tools and gadgets at a time when Mrs Steve is on a money saving purge?

I think not! Now there is a box of goodies on the way, and it will lead to shouting.

I think you are a very bad man...    :( :( :( :(

Just tell her it's some extra fencing to keep the goat under control - you plant it and it grows to full size within a week or so. Oh! What a shame! It seems to have died off - must be the poor soil.  ;)

Please don't bring up the f'ing goat.

Mrs Steve is not dealing too well with the whole goat concept. Apprently it has "evil eyes" and "looks at me in a funny way"

Oh - and when the cats annoy it it gives them a kick. (serves them right )

Absolutely normal for a goat - but Mrs Steve is not feeling much love for it. It is now relegated to the bottom of the meadow while she deals with the fact that goats are not the loveable fluffy things she was expecting.

No one seems to have answered the original question! where can you buy stanchions. I don't know who this Lane guy is and it sounds as if he is not good at delivery????

Solder paste works well but it's not too easy to get hold of these days and isn't cheap if you can find it. Basically you paint it onto the (clean!) joint and touch an iron to it. It contracts into/onto the joint and that's it. Very little cleaning necessary as the flux is  contained in the paste. The stuff I've got is called "Fryolux". I bought it about 25 years ago and it still works fine. I think you can still get it at specialist outlets - try Googling.

If you go to this site:  http://www.finescale.org.uk/show_page.php?pid=101&PHPSESSID=edb4776423eaaa8196d62c581601c029

you will find the solder you need as well as flux and a low-temperature iron to do the job.

With a bit of practice white metal can be soldered with a normal temperature iron but the joint should be flooded with flux, the solder applied to the iron tip and offered to the joint for a split-second.

Hope this helps, Chris

changed from solder to supperglue after left hand was paralised and lost all feeling .wife was horrified to find me soldering left hand to smoke stack and didnt even know. still now we spend a good deal of quality time together running fingers under warm waterto unstick then otherwise shes worried i will burn myself again. funny how i know when my fingers are cold though innit.stick to superglue if you can but remember that in a few years time in a damp cold atmosphere it may all com un glued.by then you might to have learned to solder properly.

I had a telephone call from a customer a couple of years ago.  He wanted to know if the stanchions that we manufacture were two rail or three rail?

I replied that they came in two sizes, both for two rails. He was quite indignant, "But all wars ships have three rails." he complained.

"Yes I replied, but we don't manufacture stanchions for war ships."

I guess you can't win them all?
