Capping Rail Angle
« on: July 01, 2008, 09:08:29 pm »

Hi
Can anyone help.
Looking towards the stern, does the capping rail fit 90° to the port / starboard plane, or does it follow the curvature of the boat stem to stern?
I hope the picture supplied will shed some light on my question.

regards
Gary :)

Sorry the picture is too small - I'll never get the hang of this :embarrassed:

Incredible, how did you get it so small Gary ? Dont let Martin see it, he'll want them all that size to save space on the forum. {-)

Hi Gary

Man with time on his hands !!!!!  Had a go on your picture. You need to resize them to approx  100k.

All the best

Hi Richard and Ken

I've used VSO Image Re-sizer - the original file is 527KB and too big, the largest size using this software (to me) is 29KB which is too small.
Can I ask which re-sizer you use?  I'm running Vista (if that's relevent)

Thanks for the help both.

as per fig. 1 parallel to the water.
To get my capping rails fitting well I have, believe it or not, always made them up out of 120 gram card, cut into the relative width strips for the top, and thin strips of about 1.5 mill width which go onto the inside and outside of the bulwark tops level with the edge to about a depth of1.5 mm. this then gives a good flat surface for the top capping rail to glue onto.
I use cyano for the first layer only to glue to the grp and then aliphatic waterproof glue to build up the layers of card. The card stretches once glue is applied and goes round the curve of the boat, both bow and stern a lot easier than timber or ply.
It can then be coated with sanding sealer and after a few coats can even be sanded lightly or rubbed with wire wool prior to painting to get a smooth base for painting.
have always had good results using this method.
Honestly it works.neil. O0

As with so many of these type of questions I am sure there is no definative answer and you will probably find examples of both.

My money would be on perpendicular to the bulwark, whenever possible, as it is a lot easier and therefore cheaper to make like that, until the angle gets so acute that it looks ridiculous, when they would have to be fitted parallel to the waterplane.

I think at the end of the day you can't beat the whether it looks right test.
