Rope Reels
« on: July 12, 2008, 03:36:45 pm »

I will need 3 Rope Reels as shown in the attached pic for my next project - Lulonga. This is a stern wheel river paddle tug from Africa. The plans were in Model Boats in 1995.
Does anyone know if these are available commercially - scale is 1:32 and the diameter of the reel is approx 23mm.

Hi there

quick way of make cable rails

you need to go to a shop which sells poppers/snap fasteners/press studs  O0  and buy a packet of them - the largest I have managed to purchase so far was from Ebay and they are 18mm diameter.

You use the bit of the popper which has the nipple fastened to it - you need two of these.

You then need a piece of wire insulation which forms the drum and this slips over the nipple on each end of the popper.

From copper wire you then make your stands - easily made by bending them in a 'V' shape - glue these either side to the poppers on the outside and hey presto......there is your rope reel.

See my scribble

Go into the haberdashery shop and ask for sewing machine bobbins. They make metal and plastic versions with differing hole styles.

Thanks Bluebird and Gribeauval

I knew there was something that looked like the reels on the Dave Metcalfe original, but couldn't think what it was :)

Between the two of you I should now have enough ideas to be able to make these items, although I quite like the look of what DickyD found also ;)
