The Tall ships like this Dutch two masted vessel "Morgenster" can be seen in Liverpool over this weekend.

The Tall Ships on the Mersey attracted  over a million visitors and was simply stunning . This is just a small sample .

Is it a boat or a car. There was a 10kt tide running this "boat" was doing 4MPH
The wrong way!

Took this picture of a late arrival entering the Mersey last Friday. We were returning to Caernarvon during a round day trip to Liverpool on the Balmoral. As you can see the visibility was not good.

Note the crew on the yard arms (especially the top yard on the foremast)

The conditions at the begining of the week were as bad as it gets , wet and windy. But the last day was just perfect. Always good to see these vessels in UK waters.

View of the ships as they proceeded down river.
I make it 23 sailing ships, 1 rib, 1 jetski, a frigate and that big ugly RFA Lyme Bay on the right

The guy in the yellow amphibious car got a real rollocking from the safety guys in attendance on BBC Newsnight North West tonight.  He apparently forced one RN vessel to change course in the river.

He says that he has in inshore skippers licence - it should be taken off him.

inshore skippers licence

What's that? Never heard of it. The recognised qualifications are RYA Day Skipper or Coastal Skipper.

I remember years ago when the battleship USS Iowa, 45,000 tons, visited Portsmouth. We'd been aboard a day or so before, hugely impressive, and returned to see her departure from one of the local harbour boats.

We were a few minutes from sailing time, tide just right, tugs secured fore and aft to assist her from the berth. All of a sudden, round her stern came a guy paddling a kayak! Unbelievable! An MoD launch closed in to have words and I reckon he probably broke the Olympic record getting clear.

The departure was spectacular with hundreds of small craft accompanying her out of the harbour. Probably the only chance I'll ever have of seeing a real live battleship in commission.

Hi Colin

It was the Coastal Skipper I think?  (Surely you don't expect a land lubber like me to know things like that)?

Malc, the qualifications are voluntary. You don't need a licence to drive a "small craft" in the UK. "Small" actually meaning "quite big"!

Hi Colin

I don't think it really matters if it's compulsory or not, big or not, bright yellow or not, if you force one of Her Majesty's warships to change course when in a relatively shallow river like the Mersey, you probably deserve to have your car crushed, propellers an all?

Just remembered the Navy Lark - "right hand down a bit" {-) {-)

Quite right Malc. The golden rule is that if it's bigger then you then get out of the way!
