In my patch, over the last year, some planner arranged for a pedestrian crossing across a road, but put a very wide island in the middle, leaving a way each side just wide enough for a careful bus driver. It is a bus route, and, when the prom is closed for an event, one of the main roads in and out.
In the link, interesting to see the police van come to grief. Whatever the aspirations of the planner, he should still remember that utilities have a legitimate reason for going that way. I'm fairly sure that in this day and age, that it is possible to sense the width of a vehicle without slicing chunks off it and book it via any of the many CCTV cameras around.
