mmmmmmm after fire destroyed???  >>:-( ........no evidence on any of the major elements removed of any grey blackened fire damaged paintwork

Simply some major very clean modules removed.........

Just because  it's below the waistline doesn't suggest a bowel surgery, more like major heart surgery  O0

Thanks tica....the video was interesting......absolutely no evidence of anything being destroyed by fire....so..Newspaper headlines >>:-( .......

'There was an engine room fire alarm.....found a bit of arcing & sparking on one of her propulsion motors ...shut down the motor & the fire alarm stopped'

From the E/R hull side structure, removal of the motor by cut & shut was a planned element of the vessels design

Catching the arcing so early, then with the shutdown may have well have saved the motor from a complete rewind

Based upon all of this, I think open heart surgery is the best line :P

A sweet little video from a series covering traditional crafts and their practitioners in Ireland.

If not for the subject covered as a potential subject for a model, is the fact that Mr Fury also made models as a hobby in it's own right!

Very interesting Martin. The Strathnaver was one of five so-called Strath Sisters, operated by P&O, the others being Strathmore, Strathallan, Stratheden, and Strathaird. I've always had an interest in these ships because my parents cruised to Fiji for their honeymoon aboard Strathaird, in April 1936. When I was old enough to take an interest in such things, my father used to point them out to me when they came in to Sydney after the war.

Below is a photo of the Strathaird after her refit, she originally had three funnels.

Jerry.....a colleague [ex BHP Ships C/E] after 2nd retirement from BP Gas Carriers worked for a period here at Kembla on the latest [2021] Smit Tugs

He mentioned a strict startup procedure [documented] checklist.........the Chief in the video appeared to have it all memorized, which I understand however...do you think these Froggies spoffed it for the docco?

Hi Derek,
I’ve been retired for 10 years now so don’t know the definitive answer. I would imagine now you’d have to satisfy a computer that everything was checked. I’ve worked for Smits, Svitzer and a few other companies, it’s something you just get to be fluent with. On harbour tugs there’s only 3 guys on board. Lots of interlocks and automation.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......got that wrong  :D

Switzer [not Smit] have what appears to be a monopoly on Tug work as all Ports around our Australian Coastline are serviced by Switzer ....which is part of the Maersk Group

I question if flipping a dozen switches as in the video, represents a starting procedure for a cold marine engine..........????

Just seen the Strathnaver video, some interesting shots of the ship. I have a 1:1250 scale model of her in my collection. My Dad sailed on Stratheden when she was used as a troopship during the war, probably to Egypt as he served with the 8th Army.

Hi Derek, I was going to deliver a Svitzer tug to Townsville but the last stretch had to be done by Aussie tuggies so we didn’t do it. We were living there at the time so I would have saved the air fare!  FYI, tugs engines are never cold. Always ready.
