Junk Rig Association
This is a video about sailing junks in California, the mostly Chinese people who sailed in them, the world they inhabited and about the replica junk built under the leadership of John Muir. The Shrimp Fisheries of Bay Area, squid fishing in Monterrey, Abalone in the Channel Islands, the Sand Diego area and Mexico. Single masted junks and Schooner junks. Although built to the Chinese style, these junks were products of Chinese Americans building in the USA, for the fisheries of the California area. Strange that later visits to the US by junks seemed so exotic, when these craft had been in California for so long. The story of these junks is a small part of the social history of the Chinese in America. A case of forgotten history perhaps.
Our story includes some material from newspapers of the day, but also the Hollywood film, Blood Alley, and some references to novelist Jack London.

Description: Takes note that China has nominated the watertight-bulkhead technology of Chinese junks for inscription on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, described as follows:
Developed in South China's Fujian Province, the watertight-bulkhead technology of Chinese junks permits the construction of ocean-going vessels with watertight compartments. If one or two cabins are accidentally damaged in the course of navigation, seawater will not flood the other cabins and the vessel will remain afloat. The junks are made mainly of camphor, pine and fir timber, and assembled through use of traditional carpenters' tools. They are built by applying the key technologies of rabbet-jointing planks together and caulking the seams between the planks with ramie, lime and tung oil. The construction is directed by a master craftsman who oversees a large number of craftsmen, working in close coordination. Local communities participate by holding solemn ceremonies to pray for peace and safety during construction and before the launch of the completed vessel. The experience and working methods of watertight-bulkhead technology are transmitted orally from master to apprentices. However, the need for Chinese junks has decreased sharply as wooden vessels are replaced by steel-hulled ships, and today only three masters can claim full command of this technology. Associated building costs have also increased owing to a shortage in raw materials. As a result, transmission of this heritage is decreasing and transmitters are forced to seek alternative employment.

What I Love About Museum Ships Premiered Sep 2, 2022
In this episode we're talking about why we love museum ships.

An interesting update on RMS Queen Mary at Long Beach, California.

How elegant the ship looks compared with the huge Carnival cruise ship in the background yet the QM is probably of a similar displacement to the Carnival vessel with her deep draught.

Mrs B and I spent a night aboard in 2001 and I was in heaven! She had to literally drag me off the next morning for our drive down to San Diego. During our stay there, 9/11 occurred which resulted in driving to Las Vegas as air travel was halted. A very unexpected end to our holiday.

Martin.......thanks for the 19:21 minutes of the "Naval Gun in the Making" by Messrs Vickers Ltd

These Folk together with the Whitworth Group were the gun builders of choice for the Royal Navy :-))

Also good to see the British Class system in action with the Gun assembly Foreman wearing a Bowler Hat, polished shoes and 3 piece suit whilst acting as the Crane Dogman {-) when two Tradesman were assembling a Breech Ring to a 15" gun Breech Block :-X

Also interesting, that the Cordite Storage Shed was clearly 'up-hill' by rail of the Gun Test Frame mountings  %)

Thetis.  A longer version of that video was shown on a cable channel and apparently it is all true.

I found it very funny that he rode the cordite 'truck', especially how tetchy the british cordite was compared to the german stuff.

surprised how much detritus was around the front of the barrel after all the gun trails, you would think the blasts would have cleared the majority of this away after a few shots, or was all the debris from the cordite

Brings back  memories was electro plating from leaving school till call-up bumpers by the score. Not usually damaged ones, some American ones  quite a few from their air base. All fancy shapes and curves  and made of Zinc. Strange your guys coppered  theirs and polished it  before the nickel . We coppered  our steel ones then hand scoured  soft brush and powdered. Then Dull nickelled them then back to the polishing shop before coming back to  be chromed. The polishers  were on piecework woe betide should you scratch or weld one to the side of the tank by shorting it. Surprised to see the silly man with bare arms. The bars always live when you  drop the article in
another failure if you  judder and make a double contact.
