Colin if I'm honest I would rather take that than what's presented above the border.  And that's not saying much.

"Puppet on a Chain - 1971"

Hmm I'll have to look that one up having watched the snippet.

I always thought the Thai longboat scene in "The Man With the Golden Gun" and the Florida backwater scenes in "Live and Let Die" were just about the best movie boat chases one could imagine!

I came across this video of the steam tug Eppleton Hall which made the voyage from the Tyne to San Francisco. An amazing trip.

I took the photo below at the San Francisco Maritime Museum in 2001

I was on the 4 to 8 watch on Aureol, heading south to Lagos. We saw a flashing light sending SOS. Went on standby and as daybreak came saw this. They were a load of hippies, they lowered a boat and rowed across to us and one guy came aboard and told us the story. Sparky made contact with the fishing vessel nearby and when she arrived we continued on passage.
Many years later on our honeymoon voyage and in Frisco I saw her steam past. We went to the museum and I told them the story. They knew about us and we can get a free trip whenever. Our schedule didn’t permit at the time and we’ve never been back since. Just got the photos somewhere. A bit of artistic license in the video.

This was Aureol, possibly the “cruise ship” mentioned in the video.

Why choose an option that is intended to damage property, surely red lights & cameras is a safer option.

Seems like the bollards were moved without notice and people who were used to the previous spacing got caught out. Those people could have been  significantly injured.

There have been some very stupid road calming measures around here which have caused substantial damage to vehicles without sufficient warning.

In my patch, over the last year, some planner arranged for a pedestrian crossing across a road, but put a very wide island in the middle, leaving a way each side just wide enough for a careful bus driver.  It is a bus route, and, when the prom is closed for an event, one of the main roads in and out.
In the link, interesting to see the police van come to grief.  Whatever the aspirations of the planner, he should still remember that utilities have a legitimate reason for going that way.  I'm fairly sure that in this day and age, that it is possible to sense the width of a vehicle without slicing chunks off it and book it via any of the many CCTV cameras around.

I was down in Kent a few years ago and had to negotiate a section of narrowed road similar to above but using concrete bollards. Whilst I consider myself an experienced driver with good spacial awareness ( but obviously not as good as one poster!) I was a bit nervous on the approach and going through the bollards as they are low and below the line of the passenger window. As I was driving my wife's Mini it was Ok but I wouldn't have fancied going through in my Audi A6 that I had then or indeed my current Volvo.

Crazy idea where a slight misjudgement would seriously damage your car and  I could imagine some drivers going through faster than they'd like because of other selfish, impatient drivers being up their exhaust pipe and/or being on their horn.

Nevermind utility vehicles, can fire engines etc. get through?

Given recent history on personal circumstances I want to know how BBC published that footage from personal CCTV footage in compliance with the rules of the use of personal CCTV cameras in the first place.  Also, I don't like how the BBC published the footage, when it's clear to see all the cars hit something quite conveniently out of view every time.  I don't doubt there is a problem -but there are many things wrong with that article.

Mon deu!  It's allright sating "local" people will take time to adjust but in general?  That is basically the same as the South Gyle Interchange near Edinburgh except the overpass / underpass is replaced with same level road and traffic lights.  Difference being it looks like you have to be aware to cross lanes and go left to turn right.  That said it is a DELIGHT so me some sensible roundabout road markings.  In Scotland the councils replaced almost all arrows on roundabouts over the years, regardless of direction to simply read "straight-on" regardless of direction.

Another example is at South Queensferry at the south end if the Queen Elizabeth Bridge.  Pretty much all Traffic routes are marked as "straight on", its got traffic lights all over it (somewhat defeating the point of a roundabout) but when you come to the traffic light for your delayed exit at each exit it has the "no left turn" symbol each time on the traffic light beacon -so technically it's impossible to exit the roundabout once you enter it!!!!!
