QE2 refit
« on: July 27, 2008, 10:21:33 pm »

hi all
I have just brought a second model kit of the QE2 at 1:450 . The kit represents her from her 1972 to 1977 refit. I want to convert this kit to shows as of today . Looking at photos i have found 3 main areas that require work. 1 the penthouse 2 the funnel 3 her rear decks. There are other area like her front crane etc. If any one has a set of up to date deck planes this would be very usefull or know were i can get hold of some.
If you have any ideas on how to modify her funnel all suggestions welcome.

her a photo of my current one almost finished and she is RC.

When she was re-engined the old funnel was reused by adding an additional piece to the middle and reusing the outside pieces.  I would recommend that you basically do the same with the model funnel.

You definately need a good reference book to follow through her history of changes of which there are many around at the moment.  Try the Carol Thatcher one or the Ronald Warwick one, both of which have some very usefull photo's.  Main areas, as you say are the aft deck, funnel and the penthouses but there are also changes to the original foc's'le crane arrangement, which went from two to a single crane, and the lifeboats were changed a couple of times since the model period.

As I suggested the easiest way to make the funnel would be to do exactly the same that they did with the real one.  Use the two halves of the original funnel and add the stepped peice that you can clearly see in this picture.  This can be made easily out of plasticard, heated and bent over a suitable former.

I've also included a couople of shots of her new forward crane which may be usefull.

I actually have this very same model which I have been threatening to make now for over ten years!  One day.

hi there and thank you peter and bunker barge for your photos.
Have a look at these 2 photos. Heres my thoughts.
1 on the red they cut horizontally  look from the back to the front
2 at the top of the red the increased the height at the front so it slops to the back.
3 as for the black bit i think they put in a new middle section to take the 9 exhaust pipes.
Since the red is taller and the black is wider it gives the illusion  that the funnel is not as tall as the original steam funnel.
any thoughts welcome.

I can assure you that the side plates from the old funnel were reused on the new one.  That is why the plating looks so warped in places, this was as a result of the flue fire she had when she was a steam ship.

What is deceptive is the fact that the centre is considerably fatter to fit in the nine main engine exhausts as opposed to the three old boiler exhausts.  To accomodate this the section at the rear was added to space the side plates out.

Don't be misled by the slight inaccuracies of the model, but study old photo's as compared with new ones to see how it was done.

In qe2 r+qe2 t1 the arrows show the back edge of the old steam funnel. If i am wrong can some one show me what went were

John,

Have you completed your build?  I'd love to see both Queens on the water if you've got a pic.

Hi there Chuck all most finished the first Queen, That the steam version . Just got electrics and a keel to go. On the second Queen I have not as yet started. Have found a site were theirs loads of photos of her . but what I am after is some drawings . plans . Have only found a set of has built plans but not has a Diesel ship. That funnel is 1 of the hard bits. I not sure how to tackle it yet ie were to cut the original plastic kit . Any ship yard is busy at the moment with Celestine so she will have to wait but it will happen. Hope fully in the fist 1/4 of 2009 i should have put the steam QE2 to sea.

As Wickstad is cumming soon I thought I must gt a boat finished. So sh still has a fair bit to do but did the first sea trials to day in the bath. She seams to go ok but will have to wait for more open water.

Well got her out on the lake to day. Just like the real ship she had problems on her first outing. Rudder throw, poor plastic props. and a doggy cheep chines reviver that I had to fix.

She looks very good on the water though and sits perfectly at the right line.  It would be interesting to know how stable she is though as this model is quite high so there will be quite a bit of weight high up.

It is early days as all her internals are lose . I have removed all unnecessary plastic up top to remove top weight. In the bath she was quite stable.  Once all the bugs are sorted and every thing is fix in permanently in there place I will re check stability.

Hi all
Well the first sea trials highlighted some problems.
I have fixed the rudder
I have put on some new brass props. Only 5 blade shame i could not find any 6 blade at 15mm.
Put in new ESC and a LIPO battery.

On the second trials she sailed better . She is still a bit glitchy   but I will try to iron this out.

Well after some more sea trials the bugs have been iron out
The new ESC work great.
I have put a removable keel on her helps on windy days.

Just one or two bits to do on her and she is finished.

Your QE2 is a credit to you, it makes me want to try 'plastic magic'.

Hi Tony
Thank you.
It has taken a bit of time to debug this model but I got there. You should try a plastic kit conversion. Remember bigger the better due to having a bigger displacement meaning you can get some weight in to the model.
