Halford's acrylic paints
« on: August 14, 2006, 11:31:26 pm »

Read on the forum a few mentions of Halford's acrylic paints.

Do these come in aerosol cans and if so, is the range of colours quite good \ or very limited? Would these paint be better for use on plasti card instead of the car paint aerosol (would have thought these could attack the plasti card so wouldn't be very good)?

TIA

Lots of boat builders use Halfords spray paints, most comonly used is red oxide primer for the lower hull. The Halfords sprays are mostly acrylic and will not harm plasticard in any way shape or form. The golden rule is that if you are intending to use sprays, stick to one brand only, just incase there is a reaction between the two different brands! And decide if your going to use acrylic or enamels, you can mix the two, however it will only work in this order only, acrylic first then enamel, but not the other way around!!!

Hope this helps.

Halfords acrylic's are ofine for me to on just about everything. They sell a plastic primer as well which is good for plasticard. Theres usually a wide range of colours but usually nothing naval. The bigger stores have a paint desk and mix up any colour you like in an aerosol.

Not being smart here but can Halford mix up BS381C colours rather than paint chips?  Don't think the local lifeboat station would be happen with me taking samples from their nice shiny Mersey - especially as a former crew member - long story!!

They seem to have the machine in one of the shop near where I live BUT I hadn't the heart to ask when I initially asked for Red Oxide Primer and was asked 'What's that'

Yes you have got to get past the spotty teenager member of staff who failed the entrance exam for Mcdonalds but generally if you know what your looking for in Halfords paints you are OK.  also its worth watching for when they do a BOGOF offer as its then worth stocking up.
On the colour mixing a good digital camera can take a picture of the paint colour or even print it off RNLI website or a decal lifeboat sticker they can mix to the colour from these
