How to craft a hawser bollards and fairleads
« on: November 30, 2008, 12:24:36 pm »

While perusing a magazine, I just thought someone might find this useful. Although, I am sure most of you folks have you own way of doing things.

And hawser is probably the wrong term to use. This is what I mean. or

All the best,

Jeff

Well, if you give it a go, I'd really wanna see a picture of what you did. I might try one for my Dickie Seaport as well,  I really enjoy woodworking.

Interesting, but it all seems to be a very complicated way of making basically simple items.
The mooring bitts are a case in point. There have been many different designs over the years. Some of the earlier ones were really quite elegant. Modern ones are generally just a couple of pipes with a lid on and welded to the deck with a sort of mounting plate.
But one thing has not changed and that is the diameter of the bitts has to suit the diameter of the rope / wire that is intended to be wrapped around. In the posted pic the rope is far too large for the bitts.
Remember that rope is measured by its circumference and wire is measured by its diameter. Lloyds have rules for this. I'll post it if you wish. BY.

Bryan, don't try rigging a small sailing boat by those rules. Chandlers in the UK use "diameter" for ropes, and have for at least twenty years.

Must admit to being a tad confused by this reply! Perhaps there are now 2 ways of measuring? I will agree that it is much easier to specify a rope size by its diameter as you can more easily visualise it. So I hope you are correct. Although I have my doubts! Cheers. BY.

Just a thought.
Chandlers are daling with Joe Public, so one method of measures for steel and rope is easy.

Different than that used for engineers, shipwrights etc.

Rather like engineers call a bulb a lamp.

I forgot to add that my mind judders at the thought of ordering an 8" mooring rope applying your suggestion!

A "45mm" mainsheet for a dinghy would be something else, too...  %%
