Larry looks Hairy
in conditions like that I would take the mizzen and foretop sail off and if she heels to much, reef or take in the main topsail this is a 16th century rig youv'e got so the sails were not reefed but were shortended down to the courses and then the bonnets ( 1 or 2 section's of sail laced to the bottom or the fore and main course)  you don't have bonnets on your sails so the easy way to do it is to make a smaller sail for rough conditions)

Larry at least she came up right and you got her back with no damage... ( good thinking the safety line) Half the job is knowing when to reef , when to take in sail , and when not to sail, being a good seaman and a good ships master is knowing the limitations of your vessel and her rig. and that only comes with experance .so use good old common sense....As a rule of thumb the best sailing conditions are 6 to 12 kits (about ( 8 to 14 Mph)   Beaufort wind scale 3 to 4) most smaller vessels will struggle in more that so why risk your vessel in Scale Gale, Storm or Hurrican conditions thats just poor seamanship
If you need some help you only have to ask

At Wicksteed I was ask by 3 or 4 people how I did the Filigree decorations  (Sailors Call it Ginger work) on my model boats when I said it was very simple and any one can do it I don't think they believed me  So here's the deep dark secret ... It's done with a paint called CERNE RELIEF by Pebeo. You can get it from most art shops... it is used for working on glass and comes in Gold, Red Gold, Silver, Copper & Black... the small tubes have a very small nozzle I have used then for adding rivets to ships doing gold buttons ,Gold epaulet's, making tricorn hats ,belt buckels as well as ginger work, here are some photos on how it's done

I Hope this explaines how it's done ...On a good day it dries in half an Hour to a hard rubbery finish this means you can easily build up layers to make hats, peg leg's ,cross belts  tools & weapons

Dave, love to see the pix

Kenny, I 've even used it as the square caps on cannon that fire ,I use it a lot on crew members to build up coats,  hats, beards, long hair (Remember it was only in the early 19 hundreds that the British seaman gave up wearing his hair in a Que (Pig tail) also this paint is exultant for filling holes and gaps

Footski , Its not hard to do just take your time if your unsure draw off what you want to do in pencil then go over the pencil marks ,remember you can layer this stuff ... I make Figure heads from it for some boats

Gun turret off an old turret ship, all the rivet's and the raised work is taken stright from the tube the ladder is made from staples (mini staples make good ladder rungs and hand Holds)

 Hope this helps

Here are the requested pictures of Fire Drake as she looked when first given to me (As the Pirate ship Kings Ransom) and as she looked when I finished with her.
She's out of commission at the moment as I knicked a capstan off her for the Splinter

What a wonderful job you have done on a bit of a Mickey Mouse sailing ship, congratulations. It proves that nothing is beyond redemption!

Larry & Unfinished Nautilus
Guess what
I have just been given  another one (same hull "Kings Ransom" these cost around £250.00 New and have quite a good hull shape once you chop the Spanish stile poop and Foc'le off ) So once I finish the Splinter (The Barquentine)I shall have to think of a different way to chop this one around and make it sail

Beaufort wind scale

New by Jamie

                   Inshore

When lighting flashes and thunder rolls
Like the God of Storms is playing bowls
Stow your courses and reef your mizzen
And beat offshore like your fleeing prison

Clear the headland and the reef
And make your offing like a fleeing thief
It’s only when in waters wide
T’will be safe for Jack to turn and ride

Aaaah!!!! Me thinks’ the Lady
Though small and fair
Has a rye sense of humour
That far travels hath lain bare
                     Jamie
