Humbrol colours
« on: August 06, 2006, 10:46:43 pm »

I am building the USS Long Beach a nuclear powered cruiser. I am starting to paint the hull, I have sprayed a test patch of humbrol 165. It looks ok but I am in two minds if it is too dark

Can anyone help with an accurate humbrol colour for a modern US warship ?
What colours have any of you used ?

Cheers Bart

You can buy the correct shades of Haze Gray and Deck Gray ready-mixed from White Ensign Models. Check my latest post on the thread about scale speed, though.

Paul uses Humbrol 64 for Haze Gray. The 595a standard is FS35237 but this looks very dark on a model. This is the colour that the US Navy paints the anti glare panels on the nose of F18s!!.

RN ships are painted in a colour very similar to FS36375 Lt Compass Ghost Grey, which interestingly is the colour of F18 topsides. Obviously this would be a British Paint on RN ships. Possibly made by International Paints.

Maybe some one else could confirm this.

Humbrol 127 is a good match for this. I used a mixture of Humbrol 127 and Hannants Xtracolour FS36375 with a topcoat of Johnsons Klear floor sealer mixed with Tamya Flat base!!! This gives an good durable finish. This is an aircraft modelers trick.

I looked at 64 but the test patch looked too dark. 127 looks OK  Most of the superstructre is done and the hull is done. it's a bit farther on than this photo the water line is now done and the deck has been sprayed.

... my Humbrol colour chart shows 127 as part of their SATIN finish range - US Ghost Grey. I've never tried airbrushing with Satin paints, (bad enough brush painting with them!) Assume you got on OK then 'cos the pic looks like you got a good overall finish?

Brian,
Yep I have trouble brushing with satin. it always seems streaky. They spray a treat thinned with white spirit (1:0.5) Paint to spirit)

.... thanks Bart, I'll bear that in mind, having previously 'steered well clear' (excuse pun!) of using Humbrols Satin colours in the past.

If you have steared well clear in the past, may have to stear further away in the future....

Even if Hornby buy the whole lot it may take close to twelve months to get the paints flowing,
and will they be as good, will they still be the same colours, Guess time will tell..

... I agree, Roy... It will take some time, but then the Humbrol name is worth having, providing the paints do match the customer's expectations and requirements - quality, price etc. As you say, we'll have to wait and see what comes out in the wash!
