propulsion question
« on: August 02, 2008, 05:36:35 pm »

I am about to buid a couple of sail working boats and am considering auxilary power. It would be used for recovery mainly, if the wind drops.
I would like to use one motor and prop only.

How big a motor?
How large a prop?
What diameter shaft?

Boat 1
about 1.7m long, beam 500mm. Weight about 15kg.

Boat 2
1m x 300 x 10kg

Your thoughts will be much appreciated.

TT,
Would you use the motor to turn her into wind or just in case the wind drops?

Probably just when the wind drops.
If there is a problem turning into wind, it is usually when wind is very light. If I get into trouble in stronger winds I usually wear.

But what are the options in both instances?

TT,
For rescue, a 380 motor on 7.2 volts and a 3 blade rivabo prop.
No speed controller required just a 10 amp microswitch.

To turn her into the wind a 540 size motor on a 45 mm prop.
