2.4ghz health problems
« on: August 03, 2008, 10:16:51 pm »

I have heard, but only from one source that these radios may cause problems to people with pacemakers. A friend of mine sailed a model using this type of radio equipment and within a day or two his pacemaker packed up working.
I am now asking if anyone on mayhem has heard that this maybe a problem?
If so this may not only help my friend but also all other modellers that are unaware of the problem.
If you are able to offer any advice on this subject it would be appreciated.

I suspect the two things are unrelated - the power on the 2.4GHz band is limited - even if you have the antenna close to your chest, the power that would penetrate to the heart area would be limited. It doesn't tend to penetrate wet stuff.

Of more problem I would think is the mobile phone....even then the testing is pretty stringent.

try googling this and look at the American sites.

They seem to be more paranoid and up to speed on health related issues.

A lot of cordless telephones are 2.4ghz... So are Wireless networking routers and hubs, and
new laptop computers, some wireless keyboards

Has he had any issues with these?

Stereo headset
Baby Monitor..

I would imagine that with all the house holds and coffe shops and pubs with
wireless networking, the incidents would be higher if there were a direct correlation.
However, most of these things other than the telephones aren't held near the body.

Hope your friend is okay... :embarrassed:

Thanks to those of you that have responded to my question.
Wombat, it is not the penetration to the heart that is in question, but to the pacemaker which is I believe just below the skin surface.
Tigertiger, I will try some of the American sites, thanks for that suggestion.
Umi, the reason I am asking these questions is because my friend Jim does not have a computer, so no routers, hubs or laptops involved. I do know that Jim can have great problems with Magnets in close proximity.
Finally, yes thanks Jim is making a good recovery. O0 O0
Any more constructive thoughts or opinions will  be greatfully received.

.. it is as bad as your cell-phone, hairdryers, wireless phones in General, pass on by a telecom-station, standing 30 minutes in a mobile shop a.s.o

The so-called electronic-smog has become so heavy in these days, that it could be everything which affected teh pacemaker. Not necessarily the 2.4Gig radios.
A friend of mine, which is working for German Telekom had shown me, that the effect of living nearby a mobile-network-station is 35 times higher as the effect of a radio-control working close to you.
So cool down, relax....- it`s everywhere... (unfortunately)....
