« on: August 07, 2008, 08:29:36 pm »

Hi All

This Quiz is just for fun, no prizes, its just for a laugh and to rattle some dust out of the grey matter so................here we go:

1.  Name the ship which took the part of the Graf Spee in the film 'Battle of the River Plate'.

2.  What is a 'Fisherman's Bend'.

3.  What is a 'Dan Forth'.

4.  Where will I find a back stay.

5.  Who wrote the novel 'The Cruel Sea'.

6.  What are Gimbles used for in a compass.

7.  Name the first model boat to successfully cross the English Channel.

8.  In old naval terms what does it mean to 'pay the seams'.

9. If you see a vessel at night, and it is not moving, but, it is showing three all around lights on a mast - top light is white; two lights below are red - what does it mean?

10.  Can you Translate this     - - \  • - \  - • - - \ • • • • \ • \ - -

Nice one Bluebird, great idea, not sure how you want the answers but as it's only for fun lets put up a couple to start with:

2. A rope knot
3. An anchor
4. At the rear of a mast
5. Nicholas Monserat
6. They are pivots that allow the compass to float on the level in all directions

That's my input I'm afraid!!

4 In a contralto's upper undergarments
6 The same thing as gimbals but they went to a comprehensive, innit?
7 "Jim" (a great name for a model boat, don't you think? Much better than Myrtle)
9 You're about to collide with a nuclear submarine
10 My place or yours?

Pleasure to be of help.

Well done everyone; you have all of them right....apart from Number 7.

I thought Mr Bishop would know the answer to Number 7.

Here is the answer:

7.   .  Name the first model boat to successfully cross the English Channel.

Answer:    In September 1951 - Miss E. D. became the first and only model powerboat to make a successful radio control crossing across the English Channel - and this comes from the Guinness Book of Motor boating facts and feats.

Mr Bishop knew the answers to all of them but he didn't want to spoil the party.... ;)
