Spectacular opening for Beijing Olympics
« on: August 08, 2008, 05:22:58 pm »

Just watched nearly all of it..... WOW!!! Double Wow!
.... Yes, I am into opening ceremonies in a big way. Just love the theatre, artistry, spectacle and size of the whole thing.

Beijing: Better than Athens but only in scale but the Athens theatre was cleverer!.
Beijing : Almost inspired the idea of all the athletes footprints into a artwork.
Beijing : Firework display, more impressive than the Americans "Shock & Awe!"
Beijing : Lighting the Cauldron, fantastic show piece.

Best opening ceremonies feature ever: starting up of a F! Ferrari in Milan... brilliant.

Very impressive. London will be very hard put to come up with anything as good. Now comes the boring bits before the closing ceremony....

I wonder if the BBC will run a countdown to the final day.

Watched the news highlights, Bush and Putin shown but no Brown  (if only  8) )

Probably because Brown was not there!

He is only going to the closing ceremony because London takes over the baton.

I just hope there are no terrorist incidents.

Yes, several boat related events............

Tossing the Springer. Tipped for Gold - from the USA, Umi.

Style Plunge. You all know who is tipped for Gold (he of the sinking ship!)

Deep Water Dancing in Waders. For Wales, it's Stavros in Gold position

Endurance, Tolerance, Perseverance in the Face of Adversity. Peterborough's Team wins Gold with Martin Mayhem.

Latest News Flash: Tiger Tiger ejected from Team China.

Chasing the Skirt. From France, its Monsieur Le President who gets Bruni.

Hunting the Rivet. Bryan Young and Self Confessed Lifeboat Nutter share Gold.

Wow, thanks for the nomination Roger, it's nice to be in the running.
Although I hear the club up north has got a "idoit" with a great deal more distance.

I think the broadcast in the USA would have been better served if the commentators shut their yaps.  ???

Not sure what commentators are like in the USA, Umi. However, they cannot be worse than the French! Any and every event is ruined by commentators who talk, continuously, innanely and often with "in-jokes". The only answer is to turn the sound off.

Roger, my method is turn off the sound and the vision. The next two weeks will see me firmly glued to anything but the TV.

Interesting? fact: Team GB = 300+ athletes; Team BBC = 400+

So why is he taking 30 odd 'assistants' with him  >>:-(

Big trade delgations. At least 2 million pounds was spent at one official party alone,, and a lot more was spent in Beijing 2 nights ago to boost trade

Roger - not even started HMS Kent yet, currently working on TBD80 (very slowly), HMVS Cerberus and El Teb - Nile paddle gunboat from the Sudan campaign. It's also the height of the old-car season, so I'm out most weekends with the Austin.

Tiger - it's a pity they can't just have the useful spin-off events without causing the huge, expensive disruption to life and property that building the venue has caused. I know one man's meat is another mans poison, but here in the UK we can't fund cancer treatments or equip our troops properly, but we can raise billions so that a lot of foreign athletes can come here and stuff us at everything except cycling and sailing!
