What size tug?
« on: August 17, 2008, 09:22:55 pm »

Hello all,

Had a few hours to spare last weekend and reading through Marine Modelling International, were plans included with which to make this winch. Made out of styrene, 1m/m brass wire, handles to get and a couple of cores from the wife's cotton reels (had to make sure I hid the discarded cotton well!!). I was wondering, just out of curiosity, how big would the tug need to be to accommodate it? I have no intention of making a tug for this as I have got some plans for a tug - my first. I am just interested is all. I have also never made a tug before so am not sure of the scale but hope you can tell by the ruler. All my other boats are a complete mixture of types.

Ron.

I think it's a trawler net winch rather than a tug winch

Have a look at this page.  It’s of a Mr. Darby with another “home built” winch.
The Mr. Darby is 46” x 13”.  I’m guessing the winch is about 8” +/- which would put yours in the 60 – 70” category.

Nice job by the way.

Hi Don,
Very nice too.
I will not go for a trawler that length 60" - 70" just for the winch! It will go with my odds and sods. Had enough aggro with a very heavy and awkwardly large sized Mississippi paddle boat when trying to fit in the lounge! (Aggro coming from she who was obeyed).  >>:-( It now resides on a shelf in my workshed/garage. I have a feeling that if I was to make one that large, I would spend the rest of my life floating in it never to set foot in the house again!! :'(
Now there's a thought ::)

OOPS !  I just realized that you have two different rulers in the photos !!
At only 4” I would think it could be used in almost anything.
Also since you have the plans, you could enlarge to any scale you wanted.

      Hi Ron,

      Go onto the main page for MBM and look under 'Your Models' at Guy Bagley's ' Eventide' as the drum winch looks similar to his and is on a 1/8th. scale model 'Potter' boat.

Similar. See he hasn't got any handles either!
