A 'magnetic' personality?
« on: August 26, 2008, 08:00:48 pm »

Any ideas as to where I can buy magnets nowadays? I can't seem to find the little devils anywhere...I need a pair of the things about the size of the top of an AA battery, maybe a smidgeon bigger, to hold the front hull sections of U-212 together.

Got an old mobile phone case?  They often have such magnets to hold the closure flap in place.

They are all on ebay!

Do a search for   magnets    or you want really strong magnets, do a search for   neodymium

You will get white board magnets from any stationers.

But I have used magnetic catches from the hardware store.
One side of the catch is a magnet, very powerful.
The other side of the catch is a flat steel plate. This is easyeir for fit on a flat surface. Easier than rebating a magnet anyway.

Try these guys:
http://e-magnetsuk.com/

I bought a pack of 10 magnets off them before last Christmas, was about £2.50 I think. They do all sizes, colours and strengths

If you have a shower look on the inside edge of the door. Should be a brown full length strip top to bottom this is a strong flexible flat magnet and no one is going to miss a couple of inches. Cuts easily with snips.

Maplins were selling some in pairs which are also used on neclaces instead of a conventional clasp.

If you have a wife like mine then she will have a surplus of hand bags, the ones with the flaps have a magnetic clasp (keep it clean  ) and they are very strong .

I had a look in my local Maplin the other day, and guess what? The useful small ones are discontinued.  The assistant (useful, knowlegable and helpful, probably wont be there long) suggested a visit to a flower shop, where it seems such things are used instead of pins for buttonholes.  I didn't follow it up, as the magnets were just one idea I was considering.

Just thought you'd like to know, the magnet I 'found' works a treat, it holds the two hull sections together nice and tight, and comes apart without ripping the bracket out of the hull.

Thanks guys....
