Earth race - Anyone willing to help with a scale set of plans?
« Reply #1 on: November 19, 2007, 08:55:42 pm »

Hello all.

Currently nearing completion of current build so collecting plans and thoughts for the next one.

One of the subjects that I really like is the Earth race boat

See here:

http://www.earthrace.net/index.php?section=48

Just wondering if there is enough information available in the pictures for someone to attempt to create a set of designs. If not, and I am able to get hold of some hull lines, would anyone be willing to draw them up for me?

Happy to pay any costs and a decent hourly rate ( guessing £20-£30 but I don't know what's fair ). I will also pass them on to Martin so that they can be posted on the site.

I was going to put this in the "Wanted" section, but at the moment it's speculative, as I'm not sure what's involved in the actual creation of a set of plans.

if some one could let me know what sort of information I would need to get hold of, I will try and get it. At that point, if anyone here wants to take a commission to produce the plan I'll post a thread, otherwise I will bend the ear of a draftsman chappy that I know slightly.

Having re-read the post, I realise it makes little sense. So here is a condensed form:

1) Looking at The Earth race site, is there enough information to produce an accurate set of plans, in order to build a quality scale model?

2) If not, what information is needed?

3) If/when I get this information, does anyone have an interest in drawing up a set of plans if they were paid for their time?

4) If copyright issues etc can be sorted out, is there an interest in having either this site, or another with a link here, host the plans so others can use them?

Thanks

Steve

Steve
The hull shape seems fairly straightforward  :D  those outrigger arms but  :o could be a nightmare.
I was fortunate enough to talk to one of the crew and see the boat. I have a few photos, if these will help.

Martin, Bluebird and quite a few others have given me a lot of advice on this.

From a scale point of view, it's an easy enough build as long as you know someone who can do the paint job, as its horribly complicated - essentially it's a huge tribal tattoo.

The issue is more mechanical.

a 1:16 scale model travelling at 20mph will have to support 80lb of pressure on each of the two "wings" - out rigger arms in a horizontal direction, and 70lb in an upward direction while it is wave piercing. And that is a nice simple sine-wave type "wave". Chop - semi-sinusodial is even worse for the boat mechanically becuase the boat is starting to progress into a second wave without fully leaving the first one - so there are big differences in pressures accross the hull.  And you have to build it to be as water tight as a sub. To give you an idea  - on the full sized boat each of the two wings was originally designed to withstand 115 GIGApascals of force, but this failed in the prototype, so they re-designed to support 185 gigapascals. That's a damn big number.

There is a cheat - all you do is load up the bow of the boat with bouyancy  and alter the shape of the below water line hull at the bow, and it becomes a traditional planing hull as you've killed off the wave piercing ability but I wanted to build it properly.

It's easy enough to make the boat, but to make the boat AND have it hold together at speed is a very different thing. After a lot of work and a lot of discussion, the lowest I have got the build cost estimate to is about £3,000. Most of that comes from the cost of the carbon in the wings - you need some pretty specialised stuff as it needs to blend LM carbon ( cheap ) near the base of each wing with into an IM/HM carbon kevlar mix ( very expensive)  near the top and also the vac bagging equipment that is available to modellers just isn't big enough - so your looking at making your own set up out of huge pieces of mylar and a damn big pump + regulator.

The other key problem is that it's going to be a female dog to gel coat - as there is such little detail if the gel coat is not perfect it'll stand out like a sore thumb.

To be honest, while I can accept the money involved to have a truely unique model, I can't face having to do it 3 or 4 times if I make a mess of it, and I don't want to get it on the water to immediately have itself tear to pieces. So I spent ages dithering about on the edges of it without actually doing a lot.

So in tandem with my other build I've just brought a load of pink foam. I'm going to knock up a few "foam only" hulls, and just glass them - no carbon. When my technique is right, I've sorted out the biases in the cloth, worked out how to do the blending of the cloth properly and then got my technique right with the gel coating, I'll go straight onto it. But that won't be for a while yet.

Steve,

The lads need to read your original post on the subject to truly understand the complexities in order to build the model O0

Hi All,

When I was in Leith we were berthed next door to the Earthrace took some photos and managed to get on it for a little look. If someone will tell me how to upload photo's will do if there are of some use.

mh110,

If you look at the left hand column of the Home page you will find a guide to loading photos.

When you have read that, create a Message and click on "Additional Options..." at the foot of your Message box to the left.

Quick, quick, we all want to see!

Quite a boat.

"National Geographic's trimaran "Earth Race" arrives 19 March, 2007 at the port of San Jose, Guatemala
The Earth Race rammed and severely damaged a fishing boat in the Pacific coast of Guatemala. One fisherman
was left missing and another two injured in the collision. The National Geographic's boat carried on board two
American and two New Zealand's scientists and departed from the port of Balboa, in Panama, towards
Acapulco, in Mexico"

"Anti-Whaling Boat 'Sliced In Two' In Clash"

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20100106/twl-anti-whaling-boat-sliced-in-two-in-c-3fd0ae9.html

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society said its powerboat Ady Gil was rammed by a Japanese security vessel.

According to reports, the Shonan Maru 2 also launched projectiles.

Sea Shepherd's Australian director Jeff Hansen said: "The Shonan Maru 2 had it in its direct line of sight, coming straight for it.

"It came through and took off a section off the fuselage."

The whalers accused the Ady Gil's five New Zealand and one Dutch crew of trying to tangle the Shonan Maru's rudder and propeller with rope.

They also claimed the protesters aimed a "green laser device" at its crew and threw stink bombs at them.

"The Sea Shepherd extremism is becoming more violent. Their actions are nothing but felonious behaviour," Japan's Institute of Cetacean Research said in a statement.

All six crew on the trimaran, which holds the record for the fastest circumnavigation of the globe, were rescued unharmed, Sea Shepherd spokesman Paul Watson said.

Mr Watson added: "This seriously escalates the whole situation."

Japan's Fisheries Agency, which has no direct involvement in whaling but overseas the country's fishing operations, said it was making inquiries about the incident.

Fisheries Agency spokesman Toshinori Uoya said: "We have confirmed that there was a collision, but we have no other details."
