Fantastic Voyage (1966) ?

yep, the "Proteus U-91035" from "Fantastic Voyage" (1966)...  and yes, Racquel Welch was one of the crew...    This is a vacform and resin "garage" kit from decades ago made by a company called "Lunar Models"...  and it is radio controlled, and it does run underwater...  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGnXbPrkhzc

Pretty much finished my paddler Bilsdale at last. I've always wanted to build a paddler and this was a project to explore the mechanism more than anything. The model is nearish scale with some modifications to make things easier. The paddles are independently controlled as on the original. It works OK in the bath so pond trials are the next step.

Very nice indeed Colin !  Look forward to seeing it at Mayhem if you're venturing north this year.

I started building one myself 30+ years ago and hope to revisit at some point.
I'm wondering if you made the recognised model paddler mod of increasing the hull depth/volume a tad?
Looking back at the photo of the weathered Bilsdale model and plan in Re: MFA Bolt On Gearboxes - noisy?
could be just camera angle or trick of the light??

Hi Paul,

Yes, I used Photoshop Elements to extend the body plan depth by half an inch but kept the width the same as that would have complicated things a bit. I needed some extra ballast and there wasn't much free space inside so I ended up sticking motor cycle balance weights to the bottom of the hull and covering them with epoxy resin. Bath trials suggest it has done the trick but pond trials have been delayed due to the constant bad weather.

At the moment the boat uses Glynn Guest design fixed float paddle wheels as featured on his Eccleshall tug model and they appear to give plenty of thrust. The geared motors don't make much noise really, they are 11:1 reduction on a low drain 385 motor with a maximum shaft output speed of around 630 RPM with a final belt drive reduction down to 315 RPM although normal sailing will be at a lower speed.

If it sails even half as good as it looks you'll have an absolute gem on your hands!

Lovely job John, looks just right on the water. I've now populated my paddler. Bath trials OK but still waiting for a weather window for the pond.

The whalecatcher is progressing well, I'm hoping for a maiden voyage sometime this summer.

Finally the weather relented sufficientlyto allow pond trials of my ps Bilsdale paddler. Relieved to find that she performed pretty well but some adjustments needed to the electronic mixing and a slight mismatch of power to the paddles which is being investigated.

She looks stunning Colin! The people on deck makes a huge difference in appearance, I really need to get some to my passenger steamer as she looks like a ghost ship.
Congratulations on another fine build!

Thanks Hama, Bilsdale is an interesting design. She was a passenger ship but based on a paddle tug design so she had independently driven paddles and a full hull form which helped with stability.

I was very pleased with the effect of the people on deck. They are plastic 1/48 figures, repainted and fitted with pins located in their feet so they stay where they are put!
