Slava class cruiser, or a Udaloy as a semi kit?
« on: August 24, 2006, 11:31:05 pm »

Hi ALL, anyone fancy a Slava class cruiser, or a Udaloy as a semi kit?
Or maybe even a Kiev class carrier at 1/96th scale?

....  sounds very nice, Paul, but perhaps a wee bit too modern for me....

However, if you fancy doing HMS Swift (World War One vintage mind - with the 6" gun mounting on the Fo'c's'le) you can certainly put me down for one! If it was good for Jackie Fisher, then it will do for me...!  :D

... HMS Swift (don't you just luv those three lofty, majestic funnels - magic!) This pic is in her early days with 2 x 4" guns 'up front'.

If you are into ships with multiple funnels, how's about HMS Viking (WW1). The only six funnel ship in the RN.
Personally, I could quite fancy a Tribal from that period.

.... Hi Sweeper, Deans Marine do them - well Amazon and Mohawk at least and I realise there were lots of differences between them as they were built in different yards - lovely boats tho'!!

I'm afraid I'm not that keen on Viking I have to say... 6 funnels is maybe a funnel (or three) too far... 3 funnels is fine - four is perhaps a crowd!  ;D

But of them all, Swift has to do the business for me - but then there is also the Russian Novik - or maybe have a look at the Italian WWI destroyers too!

Cheers, Brian

Just a daft thought, I have a photo of the Viking (probably a builders shot on trials) throwing out an very dense smoke screen from those funnels.
Take one hell of a smoke generator to make it look like the real thing.
Tribals? just an old family interest. My grandfather was serving in Nubian when she was damaged (stern from memory). Zulu was also damaged at about the same time (bows). They joined the two decent remains and made the Zubian. First attempt at such an exercise I think. She was left with about a half inch difference in the level of the upper deck.(If all those stories from many years ago were true!).

Here goes (i have one of those weird sense of humour).

I take it the boat was the first ever recorded 'cut and shunt'.

How big would hermes or for instance enterprise be in a decent practical scale, on the modern vessels Some of the RFA's, or the type they use for transporting tanks etc, ocean may be to big though looking at the carrier on the web site it might not be.

Hi Paul. Pity you may not have got the response you were hoping for. I think its a great idea to solicit people's opinion for your ideas of new kits. As to costs, then surely they would be in line with your \ Sirmar current prices?

Obviously a lot (although not all) of the Sirmar range is at 1\96 so would it be viable producing some of the small vessels currently at
1\96 in say, 1\48th?

I guess most people are like kids in a sweetie shop when it comes to chosing which kit to build next (and Im no different, there's 2 from Slipway's range, 2 from Fleetscale's and about 4 from yours that I wouldnt mind!)

I would be interested in a Udaloy, or Krivak from the Russian fleet at 1/96. The others are a little too big for me to build as a working model that I have haul to the pond. The one I will be definiately ordering would be the Type 45 (whenever someone produces a semi kit).
Have you ever thought of producing submarine hulls at 1/96 or 1/72 1/48? The only other commercially availables one in the UK start at over £300 for a 50" hull, and there are plenty that haven't been covered at any scale, anywhere.

Paul how about doing some subs?? WW2 era Upholder class , S and T classes and the post war Oberon class would be good starters. For size 48" would be fine ( not too sure about the scale don't have my reference books handy ).

sorry if i offended paul - i did say i had a weird sense of humour

Though the practical side of the remark was correct, as someone just pointed out, lugging an enormous ship to the lake or even storing it would be the key factor, indeed at 11 foot the enterprise would be impractical and therefore would something in the range 1/200 be better. Hermes again would be better at a smaller scale, but you already produce a fine carrier and how easy is it to lug to a venue!

I still wonder what your thoughts on RFA's, though not glamourous, they do provide an essential service keeping the war vessels on station, the detail in one of these ships would be far more complex, or would that detract for the purpose of your enquiry?

I have been looking for an RFA subject, most are as big as illustrious, even the american versions are enormous, USNS SEAY for instance (see attached), it looks like the RFA list for the UK is limited, even the USN subcontracts.

This shows 4 of 19 vessels of the class, there are at least 3-4 different types on the same theme
