Richelieu in 1/96 in NZ
« on: September 14, 2008, 09:29:12 am »

Hi everyone.
Im new here and have decided to post the progress of my latest build ( my 3rd ever model boat ), of the French battleship Richelieu in 1/96 scale as she appeared after her refit in New York.
I will endevour to take as any interesting photo's as possible to cover her buld. I may forget to show the start of a piece butwill make an effort to show once finished.
I have been researching her for about 6 years and have got a good set of 3 plans from Taubman's in 1/100 and rescaled. Also have a phopto copy of parts of an excellent book Richelieu cruises 1940 to 1955ish. Problem is it is in French but the pictures are in English thankfully.
This is my first attempt at   making a hull. My good freind Art is helpiag as he has made many a hull in his days.
I have chosen to us a polystyrene bread and butter style to give the overall sahpe, it is then plastered with drywall compound, sanded then glassed over. Finished hull is left after poly is desolved.
My tiny ill equiped workshop.

Arts workshop and hull construction.

Hull at present is sealed and awaiting to be glassed.

Cheers, Adrian.

While the hulls plaster was drying, which took 5days due to the cold and damp period then we decided to make the main turret. I wanted to make a resin casting of this so both will be the same. My scratch building technique is to say the least is c**p. this is the second attempt. Lots of compound angles made it dificult to work out the set up of the bench saw but we got there 4 hours later.
this is sealed and sanded and awaiting some minor details and the rangefinder hoods.

Next onto the decks. I used 1.5mm ply for the 01 deck and for all deck levels within the main superstructure.

The forward superstructure is made up of 7 deck levels. each wll be build seperately and then mated together. 5mm balsa is the main sahpe former with packers to give the height. Then 1mm balsa is wraped around to enclose. this is then sealed, filled, and sanded 3 times.
 01 and 02 levels.

 03 level test run.

03,04,05 and 07 deck houses bening sealed and sanded.

Cheers till the next chapter, Adrian.

A very interesting technique Adrian, many thanks for sharing the build process with us.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

Firther to my build have now completed all the superstructure components and the Funnel.
Aft 40mm tub supports. 5mm balsa and 1.5mm ply decks.

40mm supports finished.

Finished superstructure components.

Funnel under construction. 5mm balsa farme to be covered in 1.5mm sheet, filled and sanded.

What the basic superstructure and funnel will look like.

Finished funnel.

All that needs to be done now is a very light sand the a couple of coats of brush applied Humbrol 128.
Next chapter will be fitting W/T doors etc to Superstructure components and final assembly.

A really interesting scratch build . For the record there are a number of excellent National Achive photos published in the book Warships and Warship Modelling which show  in great detail  Richelieu   afer her refit in the US .

Your technique looks very interesting indeed, but finding solutions is all that matters.

As I am building the Richelieu in scale 1/200, I'll be happy to help in any way I can.

Good luck with the build.

Not much to show for now. Was  sailing in Cambridge for their Armistice rememberance weekend and my friend who is helping with the Richelieu hull turned up with it. Looks quite impressive. Still needs about 2 more layers of glass to be finished.
Richelieu Hull nearing completion. Still requires bow flare to be completed.

That is her Superstructure in pieces in the foreground.

Hope to post further progress soon.
Cheers, Adrian.

While awaiting the hull have started to assemble and paint the hundreds of fittings.
Most have been bought from John Haynes. Some were intended for my HMS Belfast so am comprimising where can, they still look the part, but the majority purchased solely for the Richelieu.

The box to the right at the back holds 14x 40mm quads. The clear box on the left holds 46x 20mm

45x W/T doors  and 55x 20mm RU lockers ready to be painted. Stuck to card with double sided tape so keeps hands clean.

All painted and awaiting removal from tape and storage.
cheers till next chapter. Adrian.

Happy New Year to everybody.
What with Christmas then New Years construction has been very slow. Should increase once kids back at school and with the recession work will be slow. Instead of going to the home office to work it will be into the garage to build. Ye ha.
Here are some pics of what I have been upto since last posting.

Start of the 4" gun Platform

Outside shields completed. 0.25mm styrene with 1mm square top trim. 1.5mm ply base.

Internal stair railing and shell loading cabinets fitted.

4" guns placed to see what the finished platform will look like.

The look of completed platform.

Various 20mm gun tbs. 1.5mm ply base with 0.25mm styrene shields. to be trimmed with 1mm square to top edge.

All tubs completed and ready for painting.

Thats about all for now. Will post some more soon, as the recession bite I should get more time to build.

Cheers, Adrian.

Well winters finally caught up and after 150mm of rain the other day, tonight we got another 124mm in two hours. The building will have to come to a halt while the dockyard is drained and dried out. All plans, tools and completed bits on the work bench have been soaked from the overflowing gutter which then flowed inside and left 15mm on the floor. Next few days hopefully the sun will be out and I can get it dried out. Wife just went to work and flooding down the road was upto the sills on the car. Ended up getting a lift with Mr Plod in his 4x4 to the hospital for night shift.

Awaiting drier times,
Adrian.

Although its been a bit cold to work quicker there have been some nice warm sunny days so have been able to get on and have made the two boat cranes. They should look better once painted. Hope you like them I think tthey came out OK.

Cheers everyone.
