BEST CAR TROLLEY JACK TO BUY
« on: September 14, 2008, 04:03:04 pm »

HI    O0

Its time to buy a new trolley jack for repairs to the car, so its for home use not commercial use

Having looked over many reviews.  Its got to the stage of not knowing what jack is best.  :D

I would be looking at a 2ton or maybe a 3ton jack. (advise here). Its has to have a low height to slide under a ordinary car (Ford Peugeot.Vauxhall ) and a lot don't have that. Also have a reasonable lifting height  to allow in axle stands and be  wide so it doesn't topple over easy. A reasonable price range is important .

What is the best trolley jack to buy ?

Hopefully no other member has asked this question, if so, point me to the thread to review it.

I would go for a commercial type

take a look at people like

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/categories/search/trolley-jacks-bottle-jacks-transmission-jacks
http://www.4wheelplay.co.uk/jacks-stands-trolly-jacks-c-171_172.html

lots to pick from
I think you may find what you are looking.
I have a wide foot 5 tonne but then I used to have a garage

I've got this one

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj2l-2-tonne-long-diy-trolley-jack/path/trolley-jacks-bottle-jacks-transmission-jacks

Cheap as chips, does what it says on the box -  but I always use axle stands when I'm underneath - just in case.

As you have intimated it needs to fit under a low car.

I once was given a 3 tonne jack that was designed with light trucks in mind. It would not go under the car.

The flip side of this is it elevated the vehicle higher from the deck. So the longer the arms the higher it will go. And then you may be getting into pro-jack territory.

Alternatively you may be able to hire bigger jacks shoulf the extra elevation only be needed on occassion.

How oftern are you going to need to do this type of work is another consideration.

Hiring may be a better alternative than buying. 1/2 day hire to get her up, and another half day to get her down.

Another trick. Use small jack to lift the car off the deck, then you can use a taller jack (that would not normally have fitted under the car) to get the extra height.  Done this before.

Hi tigertiger,
I have had to do similar to that only I used scaffold boards, drove the car onto three boards (each side) then slide jack under front and rear easy.
Once up in the air supported on stands.
The car ? Ford Escort RS 2000 with the full boy racer fandango bits (not mine- just a job to change g,box)
it was that low it would not go onto the lift ramp ! and you could not bump up or down kerb's.

I'd recomedn Machine Mart - bought a Welder from them recently and the service was very good. However if you have a Halfords near you I'd start there. I use thier 4X4 trolley for my VW camper (I need the extra high lift) and it's fine.

cheers lads for the info.

It is best to buy as it  is always there and have been glad it was many times.

The prices are o.k. but further browsing  is needed.

Seriously looking at a Clarke I seen this morn. Its rear wheels were supported not by a plate welded on to the frame side but it went from one wheel right round the end of the jack under the frame. So the jack's frame took the weight not the side plates as mentioned.

Always use axle stands and a tire ( that you took off) placed under the car near where your working helps too.

Cheers all

You just have to remember that a lot of stuff is made in the same factory in China...Machine Mart, Clarke, Halfords, the local market stall - it's often just the colour that's different and the name on the label..

Aye kinda a sussed that most were made in China  :(

Don't think we (U.K.) have much of a manufacturing industry now.  :(   :(

Had a look at the one in the local motorist shop and it was a couple of quid dearer than Machine Mart one and had a 135mm height.

Experience says got to get a lower one.
