Hurricane Kyle
« on: September 27, 2008, 08:11:40 am »

Find below a copy of an email I have just recieved from my son, (footskijunior), aboard a 10000 ton tanker, somewhere between New York and the Caribbean. I am sure he won't object to it being posted and obviously paints a tiring and somewhat scary picture.....

Hello,

Well, the fun never ends.

Currently running away from Hurricane Kyle, which means we are going in
the opposite direction to my flight home... MOre delays.

Just spent three hours in he forward store as it had about a foot of
water in it, as the anchor lockers had flooded, lots of electric motors
in there so that was fun.

I want my money back on this cruise!

Boys are still pumpingout the water, then we alter course and try to get
into the 'safe' quadrent of the storm before it hits us, which it will.

Safe being 75kt winds and 4m seas, which doesn't sound a lot, but when
you consider that the deck is only 2.5m above sea level....

Cabin secure, ropes on bed so I can lash myself in and maybe get a few
minute sleep...
Moral dropping as to be expected, everyone sick of this weather.

No idea when home now due to this storm... Who's bright bloody idea was
it to go to New York anyway!!??!

Update tomorrow..

Love
Mark.

And I sometimes say I miss the ocean, I know for sure yo don't miss days like that. My thoughts goes to those at sea and their families waiting at home. Hope you have your son home soon building boats rather than bouncing around out there.
All the best.

There isn't a lot one can say, about "our lot" here on tera ferma when you read something like that.
My sincere admiration to your son, footski and to ALL those sea fairers out there who put their lives at risk daily to bring to us, what we take for granted!
I will say a little prayer for all those brave seafarers when ever I moan about a little wind and rain that we are "blessed with" and think again in future before moaning.

It really wasnt as bag as your lad. We ended up in Mayport and Norfolk Naval Bases.
Funny thing about the US, they chuck all the Naval ships OUT of bases for hurricanes.
And I learned that most hurricanes move over the ground at about 12 mph, we outran them at 13 knots!!!

Mark,

Go to the Mayhem home page. On the left you will see a yellow column. In that column is a link for posting photos.

Hope this helps.

Are you going to wow us with photos of you in the hurricaine?
