Flexi shafts and struts... HELP!
« on: October 27, 2008, 10:44:03 am »

Hi All..

One thing evades me right now, I'm building a 48" powerboat driven by water colled 700 motors driving contra-rotating props.

I need to keep the prop shafts parallel to the keel, obviously, and I want to achieve this via two flexi shafts. BIG question - where does one get a RH AND and LH flexi shaft..!!!!  Everyone has the one intended for a single screw...  Its not urgent as I have not even cut the firt piece of timber yet... but I would like to get it sorted!!!

Many Many thanks....

MHZ Germany, http://www.mhz-modellbau.de/shop/shop.htm is one. Artikel - Antriebe - Flexwellen. Artikelnumber 1005 and 1005R if you want the 1/4 drive (60cm), 1093 and 1094R for 1/4" (1m), 1090 and 1090R if you want 3/16 (1m).

At last...  hang on a minute - I dont speak German... :embarrassed:   even tried an online translator... :-X

Never mind - for a speed 700 motor what diameter would you recommend ... 3/16 should be enough??

I waded through the website and came up with 1090 and 1090R and two couplings for square drive to 5mm...E67 or £54!!!! OUCH!!  Why is this stuff so expensive - perhaps I should stick to model aircraft - its all availble - everywhere!!  I couldnt check out because the page was in German and I could not guess any of it at all. ALso I think the 1090R was out of stock (typical!!) as it was highlighted...

There has to be somewhere in this country that we can get this from???...!!!!

A 3/16'th shaft will be plenty enough, 1/4' will just be overkill.

Try Astec http://www.astecmodels.co.uk/ , see if they can help.

Only of limited help Im afraid...  It seems the more questions I ask the less people help me out! (Previous respondents to my questions excepted of course).  The amount of research and sites that I've had to visit to get this going has been vast.

Pehaps this just wasnt meant to be - I'll go back to aircraft I think!!

Afraid that most of the "scale" type stuff comes from Germany (twin prop counter rotating etc)
Here's another link for you

Hi stobby256,
There's an old saying relating to full size pleasure boating, that also applies to model boats.

'A boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money'
