When I saw Martin's title for this thread it reminded me of:

Sometime when you're feeling important;
Sometime when your ego's in bloom
Sometime when you take it for granted
You're the best qualified in the room,

Sometime when you feel that your going
Would leave an unfillable hole,
Just follow these simple instructions
And see how they humble your soul;

Take a bucket and fill it with water,
Put your hand in it up to the wrist,
Pull it out and the hole that's remaining
Is a measure of how you will be missed.

You can splash all you wish when you enter,
You may stir up the water galore,
But stop and you'll find that in no time
It looks quite the same as before.

The moral of this quaint example
Is do just the best that you can,
Be proud of yourself but remember,
There's no indispensable man.

Malcolm

My Grandfather had that on a printed card in his workshop office (he ran a 2 man business repairing cars). As I remember (1950s) he had a stack of them. They were about 15" by 10 or 12. Never seen it since. Thanks for the complete copy.

Interesting. I once read an article that suggested that the price of a Mars bar reflected the changing value of money quite accurately.

No need to thank me, I only Googled the first line of the third verse to find it on line.  But how true?

In the 1930's there were two officers in my father's regiment called Molesworth. One had rather a high opinion of homself and his family. The regimental wit coined these lines;

There were two moles of equal birth
but not alas of equal worth:
The one who claimed his blood was blue
was by far the bloodier of the two!
