Well right now I'm semi retired, I work part time in a local model and hobby store. That said my past has been chequered with a number of occupations such as: stationary engineer in coal fired power stations, operator in nuclear power stations, power system dispatcher, industrial mechanic, steam boat marine engineer, farmer (sheep and cattle), had my own business buying, selling and moving railway equipment. Haven't stopped yet, just taking a breather until I decide what next to do.

I spent 36 years in the meat industry, mainly in the abattoir side of it. Our family owned 4 butcher shops in our area, plus a small abattoir servicing other butchers in a 60km radius. After we sold the business, in 1990, I drove coaches on a part time basis for 12 years. I had friends who owned a coach company in Byron Bay, NSW, and they asked me if I would help out. Most of the work was long distance stuff with school excursions to Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane. We also did a lot of work for the local Uni, going to such places as Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide Townsville and the NSW snow fields. I retired properly in 2003 after the coach company was sold.

I started out working in a photography and camera shop, semi professional cricketer, police officer for 22 years. Retired for the first time and then started my own Property Maintenance Company down here in Spain, but gave that up after a year or so and retired again. Now I just do some building work on a very part time basis...No time for much work now as too busy being retired,,,

I spent 22 years as a woodwork and then craft design and technology teacher, including two years down under in Canberra,OZ teaching "industrial arts" ( posh name for woodwork) before reaching the dizzy heights of head of department and then suffering a nervous breakdown and retiring on ill health grounds.
Then spent 10 glorious years driving and operating  a mobile library around the country lanes of the Fylde coast before having a bad accident and injuring my back, causing a second retirement,
Now I just potter in my workshop making models, playing with my classic MG, and moaning about the injusticies of the Grand prix season. {-)
What a wonderful life :-))

I teach English at a university in Finland, having previously spent 16 years working for BBC TV in London. A bit of changer and variety never hurt anyone.

Customs and Excise Senior Officer for 31 years. Gratefully accepted early retirement in 2006. Inherited small model electronics business from dying friend. Now work 25/8 plaiting fog, knitting spiders' webs, squaring circles and generally trying to bring practical model boat gizmos to the huddled masses. I'm told my reward will be great in the after-life............ {-)

BBC television technical side man and boy!   I joined in 1962 aged 18 and took redundancy (voluntary) in 1996.  Started as a Technical Assistant and ended as a Lighting Director/Tech Co-ordinator.   Bought the canal boat i'd dreamed of having since going on canal holidays 1968 - 1973.  I expected to become a bit of a water gypsy but the 'phone started ringing and I've spent most of the last 12 years working freelance mainly back at BBC Cardiff.   For the last 5 years I've additionally joined a boating friend working as second tech touring in a 7 1/2 tonner doing seminar tech set-ups for a well-known national organisation connected with freight.   We're retiring from that at the end of the year and the BBC work is tailing off now so proper retirement is approaching and with it more time to build models.

As a sideline I did the degree I'd not had the chance to do in the '60s (2 A-levels.  Sorry son not good enough to get into university.  How things have changed) with the OU and got a first of which I'm inordinately proud.

I now live part time on my present canal boat.

Cheers

Im a draughtsman for a diving company.  We build these big saturation dive systems which go in side the dive support vessels.  We build all the equipment to make them work, gas recover, bells etc.   We have also built a submarine rescue system for NATO which you may have seen on the news.  So i draw all the stuff.

Started off as an apprentice carpenter, then worked up to joiner.
Studied for and became Surveyor.
Went into business with my cousin doing general building in the Hampstead and St Johns Wood area of London.
Got totally fed up with the building game, so took my HGV1 test and went truck driving for what was at the time the largest tranporter of temperature controlled goods in the country. A firm well known for its whaling fleet.
Had to retire early through ill health.

I started as a temp at an insurance company a few years ago just wanting some beer money over the summer holidays.

Some how, I now design computer systems for big blue chip companies and some of the Aero/mil complex at home and abroad - including Poland which is a very depressing place especially if you have to work in an old WWII bunker for 10 hours a day as I have been doing recently.

Just as mysteriously, I seem to have a large number of Indian chaps and chappesses working for me - or along side me at least, a group in the US and some other bodies in Hungary turned up a few weeks ago, but I've only met one of the Hungarian people so far, and I'm half hoping that the others don't exist, as actually being a grown up and needing to give all these people some work to do is most worrying  and *far* too much responsibility for someone who still laughs at jokes with the word "poo" in them and finds the thought of being a parent soon so scary it keeps me awake at night.

Actually sitting down working out how I went from one to the other is - as I have found when I went to write this message - not very easy.

I think that I just kept saying "yes" when people asked me to do things. there has never been any sort of a plan or cunning idea behind it - I think i just bumbled along and have so far been lucky. Whats is the most odd thing is that I don't think I actually *like* designing computer systems and I have no real idea how I came to be doing it.

Hoping to retire before I'm 35, or at least pack in what I'm doing with enough cash to allow me to go back to school and learn something that interests me and then go and do that. And also have enough to pay for Mrs Steve's shoe habit, which is not insignificant. And I expect that Steve Jr will probably not be very cheap!

I joined the Army when I left school back in 1961, then after three years started driving Semi Trailers
from Sydney to Melbourne three times a week for fifteen years, six thousand miles a week..
Then went full interstate for twenty years and finally got a proper job at home doing aircon
servicing for two years and retired at 55, nearly ten years ago, still having a ball.......

First off I was a motor mechanic, then joined the R.N as an airframes and engines mechanic, did 22 years. My last job was as Flight engineer on vintage aircraft for the Navy, but I have had to give it up as I am now too old to fly ( military wise),so I am semi-retired but looking for something to keep me active, apart from model boats of course.......... :-\..........Smudge

Presently part of the IT team at a school in Liverpool and busy replacing equipment fried when there was a power surge over the weekend.

Previously I have been a professional photographer doing all sorts of things, written and illustrated pieces for a certain marine related model magazine though just how this will continue remains to be seen at present.

Hope to retire in four years at the latest and then travel or move to oz.

Lots of diversity on here then - lets see if I can add to it -

Petrol pump attandant (first job - when they didn't have self service pumps)
Police cadet (left before 'promotion' to Constable - it was like having the plague!)
Bus conductor (remember when there was someone to keep the peace and stop vandalism?)
Army (driving High Mobility Load Carrier, DJ and squadron bar manager - happy days)
Lorry driver (Albion flat bed with bloodstains on the cab roof where the last guy 'had an accident'!)
Chemical Process Operator (using 97.5% Sulfuric acid which after reaction gave off lots of lovely acid steam - cough, cough!)
Pub landlord (something most want to do, crap hours, plus I discovered everybody could get drunk - except me!)
Engineering (everything from press setting to turning - left during the famous 3-day week episode)
Camera salesman (actually 'manager' of 2 person camera dept in Comet!)
Photography technician (design college - someone offered me the job after coming in to Comet and getting my advice on photos)
Photographic hand printer (money was ok, but couldn't put up with working in a "dark cupboard" all day)
Audio Visual Technician (looking after tv's and videos in a University)
Audio Visual Manager (now looking after a team of 8 who fit and maintain AV equipment in another University)

Hope to retire in 3 years (and join Footski, if I can talk SWMBO into it ;-)
Met the wife when I was doing a spell of Big Dipper driving on Yarmouth seafront during my 'holidays' (ran out of cash).

Needless to say, most of these DON'T appear on my CV - so keep it schtum - OK!

Hope that's diverse enough - my brain hurts just thinking about it. Probably inherited (my parents moved 9 times before I was 16 - I kept finding them though)  {-)
