Wow, what an interesting set of CVs, so interesting and varied. All you guys seem to have simply said yes and enjoyed what followed or just stuck with what youare/have been good at.

Me? I started remunerated employment pick soft fruit the, while a student, progresses to long glorious summer months working on a grouse moor in Angus.

Now? Well three jobs moulded into one as a GP and informatician: with a ready to roll shed/workshop and lots of boats to be made

Mustn't leave it too late, though!

Started as a motor mechanic eventually owning my own workshop then got in to a shop building and selling Go Karts and similar fun thing which meant we got to race in Aus and USA and visit the UK to check out how it was done there. Set up several indoor rental kart facilities and just kept getting busier and busier so sold out to my staff in 1998 and moved away from the big smoke to a small country town. Went back to Polytech for a year to study sport and recreation with an emphasis on sport for people with disabilities at age 52 and the next oldest in my class was half my age so that was fun. Got presented with a tee shirt that said "Youth Skill and Enthusiasm can always be beaten - by Age experience and Treachery". Nowadays work as much as I need tp feed us and do some community work, currently on a one year contract to get more young people in our district in to apprenticeships but soon will be unemployed again. Try and live by the Ulysses Club moto of "Grow Old Disgracefully"!

Started work as a watchmakers apprentice (hated the workshop life), then went into financial services (hated high pressure selling) Joined the leisure industry in the late 70s.
Now run a gaming and amusement machine leasing company, supplying pubs and clubs with coin operated equipment. Started with the company as a service engineer in 1984 and bought the business 1997.

Can't wait to retire - so many things to do that work has got in the way of!

Started as an organist (well what other occupation pays you to play with an organ every night - er, don't answer that!)
Then took a break from the travelling when the kids were little, bluffed my way into an IT post (I knew more than the interviewer, but that was about it!) Had to learn verrrry fast!
Then back to the organ until I got fed up with the travelling again.
Now a music and IT teacher.

Started off as an apprentice carpenter, then worked up to joiner.
Studied for and became Surveyor.
Went into business with my cousin doing general building in the Hampstead and St Johns Wood area of London.
Got totally fed up with the building game, so took my HGV1 test and went truck driving for what was at the time the largest tranporter of temperature controlled goods in the country. A firm well known for its whaling fleet.
Had to retire early through ill health.
Dicky...a serious question (for once)....what is the difference between a Carpenter and a Joiner? I have long been puzzled over the differences between a Carpenter and a Shipwright. Can you enlighten me? BY.

I was always told by my grandad who was a master cabinet maker and carpenter that a "carpenter uses joints and glue" whereas "a joiner uses nails and a hammer" :-))

That's correct, straight from Wikipedia

Quote
A Joiner differs from a Carpenter in that he cuts and fits joints in wood that do not use nails, usually as a furniture maker.

Started as a humble paper boy on a morning round for 6 yrs, started my cadetship (deck) when I was sixteen, joined my forst ship the day before my 17th birthday. Spent 10yrs with a large tanker company.... Thought the grass may be greener so went on a private yacht. Went slightly mad, hated every second of it. went to Spain for a couple of months, annoyed the hell out of my parents! Came back to UK.
Worked in Security for a while, moved a little up the ladder...
Worked as a bunker barge skipper in Liverpool for a bit.
back deep sea 2004 as 3/O.... Got Chief Officer 18 months later and still loving every minute.

No Neil thats the wrong way round, its the joiner that uses joints and glue and the carpenter uses nails and a hammer.

Qualified as a Coal Mine Surveyor in 1973, but never worked in a coal mine in my life!!  Started off as a trainee Land surveyor on the 2nd Mersey Tunnels in 1970, then went on to work on the Loop and Link railway tunnels in Liverpool. Spent most of my working life in Civil Engineering doing setting out and Land Surveying, quite a bit of it underground in sewer tunnels etc.

Had a second career in selling,.... Surveying Instruments then Structural Steelwork. After redundancy got a job with the Police as an Enquiry Officer (Civilian) on the front desk of a City centre Police Station and I have to say it was the best job of my life.. every day completely different.  SWMBO then decided we should move to Scotland, so I'm now a part time lab technician in a quarry, testing stone and aggregate and asphalt for road building and building model boats part time for a hobby.

Started training to be an airline pilot while still at school but my eyes were failing and, even though ok corrected, I didn't meet the requirements.

Spent 5 years in IT as a Project Manager for the local water board, then left to start my own computer game design studio which went great for 2 years until the tax man decided I hadn't been paying enough tax given that most of the work was overseas, so once I'd paid all my bills the company couldn't afford to work anymore and so that got folded.

Trained as a Truck Driver  (Class C) in January this year, which is what I really, really want to do, but haven't been able to find a single driving job in my area (U-33, you know of anything in the Eastbourne area?!!)

While I'm waiting for a driver position to come up I have been made Import Director of a large international clothes firm, doing lots of boring managerial type stuff, money is nice, as is the lifestyle, but its not really what I want to do.

Not a bad CV for 23 years of age eh?  :-))
