It's one of those famous artworks by Antony Gormley, the "Angel of the North" artist.

Incidentally, Illustrious is supposed to be on the Thames for Remembrance Day. Does anyone have her transit dates yet? I can't find anything on line.

You need to see it from the other side - the water is pretty cold.... :o

I thought all the Goldsworthy sculptures had been moved from Formby. The original installation had many such "men" along the beach. Or is the photo old?

There was a bit of a fuss but they were allowed to stay although I think one or two were moved as a danger to navigation.

Yes they are definately still there, there are 100 of them over a couple of kilometres of beach, a few further out ones were due to be moved due to complaints from jetskiers, as they think they may hit one that is just under the surface at high tide - shame we cannot complain about the jetskiers noise and get them shifted somewhere else

That's a bit unfair! Consider the effect of even a strong breeze pushing a large slab-sided vessel. Especially one without much steerage way. With a carrier (stopped) and with a 20knot breeze against her she is probably having a 100 ton force pushing against the hull. Berthing a large ship in somewhat adverse conditions is not at all like parking a car. I guess that ships with "pods" can do it, but those with nothing but spinning wheels at the back have no choice. Just look at some of the old photos of the "Queens" etc. berthing in New York. Perhaps 11 tugs pushing and pulling. Now, with modern technology a similar sized ship can do the same with maybe only 2 tugs "standing by".

Even when i was on challenger with pods and bowthrusters you still need tugs as Brian said wind puts massive force on side of ship
