Voltage regulators?

Can one of the 'enlightened' please post a tutorial showing us in layman's terms......how to use


1...........Voltage regulators to drop    say 12v to 3,5,or 6 volts,

2...........How to use a variable voltage Regulator chip as sold by Muppetlins..............their staff are now just till operators!

Don't omit the two diodes in page 9 or it can be damaged if you short the input.
For the LM317 you may need 2 volt in excess of your output voltage if you draw 1 amp.
If you have a spare diode, connect it in series:Anode to +v ,Cathode to LM317 input.

You are FAR better off using LM2940 or LM2930 series regulators. Avoid the 7805s and 6s and LM340s as they are more easily damaged and dont protect the load on reverse connection unless you use a series diode.
A good idea is to use fixed regulators too as you forget to change the voltage

Any specific questions on the data sheets then post a link and just ask away but give as much info as possible.
