Model Winch Motor...
« on: September 02, 2006, 11:08:57 pm »

    Hi Guys
I have converted a small American multiplier fishing reel into a working towing winch & fitted it onto my   "SMIT NEDERLAND"  tug.
I am now looking for a small low speed high torque electric motor to power it.
The motor will sit under the stairs on the Port side of the boat...
Can anyone give me any ideas on which motor would be suitable for this job...

    ...REGARDS & THANKS...Norry Mason...

Hi Martin...
I have used small rechargable screwdrivers for other boats but I dont have the room for one on this boat...
The motor  will have to be about 1&1/4 inches diameter & about 2 inches Long...

P.S...Nice to meet you last week at Ellesmere Port...

If you can't find anything over there, try All Electronics in USA.
http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category/400400/DC_Gear_Motors.html

Most of these are pretty small
Check out DCM-285, DCM-277, DCM-278, DCM-281

I use DCM-286 in my crane. At 24 rpm it looks realistic operating.

Somebody mentioned these guys on another thread-
http://www.fastcomponents.co.uk/
They seem to have some small motor/gearbox items.

Norry, we have made some good experiences with servos. If you open them you will find a block where tehy use to run on. Ig you cut that out it`ll go round. Also sail-winches for yachts are pretty good. And they are very small in their size- probably the thing you are heading for?

              ... Hi White Ensign...

I am thinking of using a sail winch servo for the Gog or Towing Bridle Rope...
This will only have to let out or pull in about 6 inches of rope...

Norry- though a sail-winch might be your decision. But before you buy a brandnew one- have a look at Ebay or at the forum for SALES, probably you`ll find an item cheaper than a brandnew one.....

Try searching for robot shops - there are many of them online and they have interesting bits of kit.

for example http://www.solarbotics.com/ have a few gear motors, including this one which is a little over an inch long...

If you want one of them try

http://www.fastcomponents.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=56&osCsid=fc25617e8a3b22312472657c9ca50d12

they are about a third of the price and the same motor

they are very strong and would be ideal Peter

       ...Hi Steve...
Stand By The Scots Are Coming...
Billy and I will be down at Featherstone on Sunday...
I dont think we will be bringing any boats just ourselves...
One of these bilge pump switches might be handy for my STANFORCE as i cant trace the slight leak that it has...
I will bring down aa copy of my video called "CLYDE TUG POWER"...It shows some of the towage jobs on the Clyde...I was telling Mick about it at Ellesmere...
