Show us your best Choppy sailing photos - one is never enough
« on: October 23, 2008, 09:50:41 am »

Unlike Steamboatbob who likes the serenity of a glass lake, I like it rough (ooh! er missus).

There is nothing like the boat healed over  on a broad reach, or even the fun of porpoise-ing, heart stopping moments, and having to pump out the hull later.

Went out today, had to reduce the sail plan and still managed to porpoise the old gal. Only about 2cm of water after 3 hours. The wind on the canal was in the same direction as the canal the waves weve about 1 ft high, fun with a hull just over 31 inches. I am glad to say the scuppers worked well. One hatch lifted but I need to put a stronger elastic on the hook.

I even had her on a run for almost 2km on the way home. Good job I had my trusty chariot.

Oh! The life on the ocean wave,
Tra la la la la la la
etc.

This is my 1/32 scale HMS BRYONY sailing at Southport marime lake, it was very choppy but from the picture it looks reasonably carm, the model is 7 ft, look at the flag on the stern, thats a soft silk flag.

Hello TigerTiger
Wonderful pictures !   incredible how sharp and clear those images are .
I do have one question though , if you are yachting on a canal with a paved right-of-way along it , have you ever considered
attaching your radio transmitter to the console ( with elastic cord of some kind ) ?   Seems like you could motor along while also
steering your sailboat at the same time !  You could really make some trade wind passages then !    Happy Sailing !
P.S.  Might as well add one of those gimbaled drink holders to the handlebars also !  thirsty work , sailiing....

Hello,

Some pictures taken some years ago of  "A Class" Vane Steered boats racing in a Gale !!.
Taking the photos was quite hard to stand still, the wind was so strong.
Almost as soon as the last photo was taken it started to rain, heavily, it was just like being under a Power Shower !!.
I did the decent thing - - - legged it back to the car !.

Warwick Today..

At times the water was quite choppy and just as we got to the display pond we had a sinking.. I do not think the blue speed boat had anything to do with it , but was trying to get it closer to the side for rescuing..

Neil,

couldn't help but notice the writing on the top of the middle picture 'ORRY'. Is this the photograph of the 'King Orry' which was aground at Glasson Dock in the late 1970's.

yes Tony , that's the one. The photos were given to me by a college mate, whose father, a captain Mills was the captain of the Duke of Lancaster and they were taken from one of the fleet as they were passing by. %%
Incedentally is the Duke still down on the Welsh coast rotting away or has she finally been scrapped. Anyone know? <:( <:( :o

hi there

2 photographs of HMS Orkney is some rough weather some time ago

3rd pic - I found very inspirational - look at it closely and you will see a guy standing on the bridge just calmly looking at the wave breaking over the bow, and, look at the guy at the back - just working away oblivious of what is going on.  O0

Those are some great pics of the Mary Jayne!  :-))

Tiger, you should see about exporting those tuk tuks for Footski & the rest of the model boating world.  If I keep growing the fleet, I'll need to consider getting one myself to run up to Tiger Hole & Xiang Hu.  ok2

That belongs to one of our members - the fishing boat. I suspect it was the first time on the water as I only made the name for it in October. I haven't seen him since Warwick so don't know the story. We had another sinking on the Saturday - our Chairman brought an old boat for the kids 'hour', and that started taking on water :embarrassed:

I think something went a bit to fast near it and created a bit to much swell, It went down gracefully though. :-))
