Hi BobK,

That was my model at Deans show last year, and Wiki this year.

All six shafts are powered from two motors, in banks of three. The center shaft is direct drive, the ones each side are belt driven.

Handling wise she is fun, turns superbly but the sting is trying to keep a straight course.

Nope, to the mouldings......it will need a new hull pattern, as my model is copper plated and over 25 years old now!! probably a bit too fragile to mould off by now.
I have since got far more accurate info on her, and have thought about rebuilding it at a larger scale. But at 1/48th scale it would be a bulky model, 24" beam!

Just for Bobk,

If you like the unusual job's, here is another of my long ago, retired models It is the USS Neosho. A stern wheel river monitor from the American civil war.

Built on a high density styro foam hull, 1/64 plywood sloping deck, plastic card and lime strip superstructure. The paddle wheel is belt and chain driven from a geared motor.
She uses four rudders, two ahead of the wheel and two behind. This model could steer wherever you wanted it to go, both ahead and astern.

If I get time to refit her, it may make an appearance at next years Wiki...........if......

Ian.   I love your USS Neosho too  :-))

I never got to see your Novgorod on the water.  A 1/48 scale would be a more practical scale for me.  Your 1/96 was incredibly compact, especially inside.  A superb model.  O0

I built a model of Novgord at College about eighteen years go in 1:50th scale and it was just about practical a size, so 1:48th will be a bit bigger, but still not unweildy. I suppose it is ust the case that it is very wide which can make carrying a bit more awkward.

I will scan and upload the photos I took on good old film. I float tested her in 1998 and found that she would need loads of ballast given her superb displacement hull.

I am tempted by the Popov as her superstructure is more attractive. I will see what plans are available for her. My original Novgorod model was never fully completed and was disposed of having suffered the ravages of time in 2009.

Movement was controlled by the engine speed, smoking is made to me personally, and cannon shot cartridges with gunpowder and are made as a casting of polyurethane with a metal filling, for developing smoke is not used oil, using tree resin evaporation hot wire.
They are placed inside the chimney flashing LEDs that mimic the smoke bursts of flames from the boilers

Excellent to see a Novgorod sailing. It just sits there on the water without any chance of capsizing.

She looks lovely Ufon. Your translation is excellent.

Does anyone know where I can get plans of the Popov? I had a look on the Dreadnought project site but they had nothing (unless I looked in the wrong place:O)

Does anyone know where I can get plans of the Popov?
As far as I know - model plans of this armored ship were never published or even existing.
Thence the only place where you can get relevant drawings on her - is the Naval archive in St. Pete...
BTW the Central Naval Museum in St.Pb is also worth a visit - amongst a hundreds of builder's models of the era you can find a very interesting model of ADMIRAL POPOV with the raised upper turtle deck - showing the machinery and the rest of the ships' internals...
Here is quite a rough sketch of  VICE-ADMIRAL POPOV- authored by a friend of mine.

thanks for the compliment,
My Novgorod is roughly 1:50, but unfortunately I did not get quality plans so I built by a Polish paper model.
After I finished building a published photograph images came to me from Russia and even drawings. But then I came on HD in the computer, so I have no contact on the man who sent me everything.
Picture Popov here to discuss'm very interested I would like to put this ship .... I'd like to see next
Photography is a warning of how it is necessary to model this size run on water ... my Novgorod weighing 25 kg was exported lead. Next time I would probably use a ballast tank.

That looks excellent Ufos even from the bottom stern quarter! Thanks Bob, I will interrogate the St Petersburg museum and see what gives.

I read that HMS Marshall Ney was just as unmanouvrable as the Popovs due to her poorly developed underwater lines and also unreliable and underpowered engines, showing that even fifty years later the design of a low draught wide hull was still to be fully understood.

Re: The Novgorod....UME MARU circular / round Tugboat!
« Reply #142 on: April 30, 2020, 09:39:20 pm »

Now here an interesting / modern take on circular vessels!

It's Japanese and called the UME MARU:

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2923989&fbclid=IwAR3-f5QX35Eq_KN_EFOHuWO-m9exyRb-rxIloh21YQ_Jc-Yu0TUFyepo4NU

This unique round shaped tugboat was created through a totally new concept of externally attaching a full slewing thruster to a towed ship. It can be easily operated by this single-lever-controlled slewing thruster. Adsorption equipment can eliminate the tug line, saving 2 workmen from handling ropes.
