Calder Craft Marie Felling
« on: October 28, 2008, 08:46:09 pm »

Hi All

I am considering buying the Marie Felling tug kit I just wondered if anybody can give me any comments on the kit it would be the single prop version, I have made a few boats in my time but I dont know about this kit manufacturer
Is the twin prop version better than the single ?. does it sail well etc ?

Many Thanks

Mike

nice model, good kit and plenty of charactor and detailing. sails better as a single screw....I've built both versions over many years of modelling, and they make a pleasing model to build..............go out and enjoy the experience.
However I prefer the Imara from the same manufacturer myself.

Hi Mike,
It's only personal thoughts but I find the Marie Felling a little odd looking with the boat deck forward of the wheel house, and a little quirky.
It's not to say that I don't like it as a ship..I do....I just prefare the oldy worldy looks of a conventional tug layout a little more, as in the Imara.
Both use the same hull but to me ( and again I stress it is only a personal preference) the Marie Felling looked as though a child had designed the original layout on the 1930's with out actually seeing a real boat........as though it was an imaginary vision.
However I must say, that as for building, the Marie Felling, being the more quirkier of the two, is a more interesting boat to build( again in my own mind)
Have fun, and enjoy building what ever of the two you choose. :-))

I should think that mounting the boat forward of the bridge is quite logical in many respects. It enables the mast to be used to support the boat handling derrick which means you don't need a set of davits further aft. An economical solution if it's only a small boat.

If you're not building it as a scale model, no reason not to move things around to suit your own tastes!

Did the Marie Felling ever work around the UK, before and after it's stint in South Africa? I notice its "Hull" registration on the stern.

No, she did not work in UK waters. You will find a bit of her history in the first entry of my thread at http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=554309&highlight=marie+felling+build
