Help to ID this tug model?
« on: November 03, 2008, 05:25:54 pm »

Bid for on e.bay and unless one of you lot gets in betweenn now and the closing date, all mine!

It looks like a 'Bustler' class - almost definitely is. However, who made it? I see it is 33" LOA so at a guess, 1.48 scale. Any help on ID'ing it would be appreciated!

Hiya Jonty,
it's ex Bustler class 'Growler'  whilst on charter was renamed 'Caroline Moller' in 1947-1952, 'Castle Peak' in 1954 and 'Welshman' in 1962.  23.10.63 renamed 'Cyclone'. Civilian manned under RFA conditions. 1977 laid up in Gibralter. 16.4.83 sold to Eagle Tugs Ltd, Georgetown, Grand Caymen for use at Mombasa. Removed from Gibralter and renamed 'Martial'

On the model the foredeck gunwhales extend right back to the front of the superstructure.
This doesnt on the Bustler Class.

Hiya Neil,
yes 'Turmoil' is a bustler class, would like to make a model of it one day.  I see you have the Ewart Brookes book.  She dry docked here in Milford years ago when I was a kid, if you go to the
www.milfordtrawlers.org.uk/ site and look up the Milford Star photo you can just make out the Turmoil tied up in the background. There is a nice painting of her and Flyng Enterprise in Milford Museum.

Well, I lost the bl**dy auction! Someone upped the price from my generous £66 (which had been the highest bid in days) to £98 last minute.

Thing was, the bloke who was selling it. I asked if he would meet half way adding that I would chuck in an extra £15 for petrol. I live in Oxford and he lived in Brandon. I thought Newmarket was OK. But far for me but hey, not an issue.  :}

He said 'Sure. £35 for fuel then..........'.  %%

Now I think of it, he was after a ton for the model from the word go.

Why is it I never get any luck on flea bay?  :embarrassed:

Cyclone, was manned and run by the Port Auxiliary Service, the crew drawn from all the yards on a volunteer basis. It was an experiment to prove that the P.A.S could run and operate successfully ocean going tugs. The Cyclone was never registered as far as I know as she was allocated to the P.A.S who where a MoDn department and operated there vessels under the same rules as warships ie DGSR owned and maintained vessel. Yes she was a member of the Bustler/Turmoil class. The experiment must have been successful as in the reorganisation into Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service, the RFA Ocean Tugs unit was included and their vessels were deregistered and repainted black and buff from black and grey.

cheers, KEMO.
you learn something new daily.I always thought that the Turmoul was a class in it's own right , and when others started calling it a "bustler" I became confused.
cheers,neil. :-))
Jonty, you never have any luck on fleabay because you don't bid to win.
If you bid for a bargain, you will ALWAYS loose the bid, as others want the item MUCH MORE than you do, sorry to say.

Hiya Jonty,
if you fancy building your own Models by Design do a couple of Bustler hulls, one at 1:72 and one at 1:48.

Also look at the "Confiance" hull by the same company, I built one of these over 20 yrs ago and she sailed superbly.
