alternative sound system for a boat.
« on: September 29, 2006, 04:32:39 pm »

hi i just read on another forum a guy is using an mp3 player and a small fm transmitter and a small speaker to use as a sound system for his boat.it sounds like a good idea the fm transmitter pics up the signal from the mp3 player and plays it via the speaker.the amount of sounds you could play are only limited by the amount of memory your mp3 player has.even a cheap 24 quid one from argos holds 8 hrs of memory.i also found this cool site you could download sounds from!!!.http://http://www.sounddogs.com/results.asp?Type=&CategoryID=1010&SubcategoryID=48

Why does he need the FM Tx? Surely the MP3 player will drive a loudspeaker. Also, how can you select which sound you want?

It sounds like a variation on the tape player idea.

he uses the transmitter so he can hold the mp3 player in his hand and play what sounds when he chooses.the transmitter has a range of 100 ft or so.and runs off aa batterys.

Should work OK provided he remembers the small FM receiver to put in the boat.  Might be a bit tricky selecting the track to play and control the boat at the same time.  The price of these things is dropping all the time, so they should be a worthwhile toy to experiment with soon.
For continuous background sound adding character, one of my club members uses a tape player.  His post civil war sternwheeler always attracts attention when the banjo band is plunking away, as does his 20th century sidewheeler with the brass band entertaining the passengers.  The MP3 would do that job if mated with a small amplifier like those from Maplin and a suitable speaker, but should fit into a smaller boat.

Malcolm

That's a great idea, but can you dowload MP3 tracks of large marine diesel engine sounds from Virgin's site?  ;D ;D ;D

The other problem is that whatever sounds you do manage to get onto the MP3, they're not going to include a start-up sound that will play every time that you move your transmitter joystick away from rest, or be proportional to your motor speed?  I imagine aiming and firing a naval gun might be a bit tricky with an MP3 player also?

Still, the idea has got to find some applications.  Great for playing music as suggested.

Regards, Malc

you can download any sound you can think of here
http://www.sounddogs.com/results.asp?Type=&CategoryID=1010&SubcategoryID=48
granted they are only small files but the sound is exellent you can get really small speakers nowadays so you could maybe wire up a few on a boat if you hide them well.ive seen some torpedo shaped ones !!!
there are engine sounds for the mtb boats start up docking manouvers and full speed runs etc, also go to sound efects at top of that page and go to links and do a search for what you want ,check out the browning machine gun 50 cal absoulutely brilliant sound should work well on an mtb .as for linking it to your motors etc that might be dificult but hey were talking a few quid here compared to hundreds and the files you can download are endless!!.mp3 players are 24 quid from argos the fm transmitter say £20 and a small speaker about the same not a bad sound system for 60 quid or so.and your not limited to a few sounds your only limited by the memory of the mp3 player which is arround 8 hrs of sounds!! on a cheap one.another way to get the sounds to play when you want is get someone else to do it while you drive lol ;D.let them zeros have it with the brownings and im sure you will get a good crowd around the pond  ;D.or maybe some background music as stated before any requests?.
